Film School Rejects: Empire Names the 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time

  • Brent Peconi · 1 year ago
I read this yesterday, at my desk, while eating lunch.

Ginger ale came out of my nose I laughed so hard.

This is obviously up for argument, and thats probally what they wanted. Only someone that is not in tune with film would set some of these characters on this list.

I dont see characters by some greats Paul Newman/Jack Nicholson/Jack Lemmon/Kevin Spacey... yet I see others I just look at in disbelief.

How in the fuck does Peter Venkman get beat out by Jigsaw?
  • Scanain · 1 year ago
Captain Hilts - Steve McQueen from Great Escape or his Papignon (spl?)

No Dustin Hoffman ? Even nurse Ratchet is better than half the characters in that list.

    resounding MEH from me.

why are most of these characters from movies that were made in the past decade?
  • JMoney · 1 year ago
So is it only Godfather 1 Vito or the combined character from 1 and 2. because if it's just one i'd make the argument Micheal should be higher.

I love the movie "Donnie Darko", and Jake does a fantastic job, but I really don't think his character is, I don't know, memorable enough(?) to be that high or at all. And putting Tyler at the top, considering the rest of their top 10, seems like just a way to get people to talk about it & stir up disagreement. Luckily, that won't... dammit.

Hard to agree with half of that list. A few of my favorite characters from that list would be The Dude, Travis Bickle, and Daniel Plainview.

What was the criteria for being one of the greatest? Probably similar to the popularity contests that makeup the greatest films of all time lists.

Probably because this is written by some kid just out of college, and hasn't watched much out of this last decade.

    ^That's just pure speculation.

I am conspicuously not on this list. This agression will not stand.

alex de large should NOT be this far down..
    that being said..
not meaning to state the obvious but you can't go right with this kind of list. then again, their point isn't to actually fabricate on some fixed, reliable criteria (idealy speaking) a valid classification. no, it's just to get people agreeing or disagreeing.everyone should post (wherever they have the opportunity) their own list.empire would be at such a loss then

It's a good list of memorable characters. I have no clue how they came up with the ranking. Tyler Durden? He's an awesome character, but why is he no. 1?

While I want to disagree with a lot of the Top 50 above, I simply can't bring myself to do it after looking at the other half, numbers 51-100. The fact that Charles Foster Kane came in at #97 - the meat of a HAL-9000 and Clarice Starling sandwich - is simply so amazing I can't find the words to describe the way I feel right now. Finally, a list featuring the words "Greatest" and "Movie" comes along and Citizen Kane is nowhere even remotely near the top. Change truly has come to America.

I appreciate that they're trying to cater to newer audiences but facts are facts, and half of those names shouldn't belong on that list let alone high up on that list.

Needs more Inigo Montoya and Daniel Plainview.

I'm just glad it's got TWO Anchorman characters on there in the top 100.

And again debate is to be had from this but saying the list is shit is fairly pointless as it was voted for (I voted).

Why is it that only a small handful of characters (2? unless I counted wrong) on this list is a woman? What about Scarlet O'Hara? or so many others. This is horribly sexist.

I counted three in the top 50 (Ellen Ripley, Mary Poppins, and Amelie), and Ripley is the only one who made the top forty. Something seems a trifle bit wrong to me about a list that rates Jigsaw higher than Clarice Starling, Holly Golightly, Scarlet O'Hara, etc. on a list of "All Time" greatest characters.

I will say that I was happy to see Amelie on a list of greatest characters. She's often overlooked on lists like this.

So From this list, I see hollywood does not have many great black actors . . . right.
