Film School Rejects: Empire Magazine Names the 500 Greatest Movies of All-Time

  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
My entire top ten made the list somewhere or other so I am rather happy. I expect a lot of moaners though who say oooo number 38 should be higher than 21 GRRRRR despite it having no bearing.

did anyone notice that the dark knight at no 15 is the highest placed post year 2000 movie in the list...and that there are only 3 post year 2000 movies in the top 50? hmmmm...very interesting...

i don't think i would be mistaken in pointing out that the quality of story telling has fallen badly since we hit the 2000's. in fact, you could make a point that the lord of the rings adaptations are straight from the novel therefore the only really outstanding movie since year 2000 in that list is TDK.
thank you hollywood for churning out the sad dribble of mindless violence and pointless CGI instead of sticking to old fashion entertainment.

p.s why isnt Pan's Labyrinth in the top 50 at least?!

These kinds of lists are always vaguely pointless. I'm not sure if working out whether "Die Hard" is greater than "Schindler’s List" is worth the effort.

But its good to get some people's attention to films that are definately must-see but may not be well known: "The Third Man".

Is anyone else kind of annoyed that The Dark Knight keeps making these lists? Sure, it was one of the better films this year, but in the top 15 best films of all time? Really?
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
I think its being heavily overthought. The Dark Knights there because it was at its highest point of excitement when voting commenced. Why not look at it as a list of 500 films that are worth owning.
  • Nate · 1 year ago
Miaden, I completely agree with everything said.

Coming up with a top 100 is so frustrating, I don't know why anyone does it. I mean, how can you choose between #100 and 101? Choosing a Top 10 is a little easier.

Oh, and The Dark Knight in front of 2001? I mean, sure Dark Knight is a great movie and could end up being the best of this year, but 2001 is arguably the greatest movie ever made. Aren't we getting just a little bit ahead of ourselves? I don't think this list is very credible.

I honestly don't give much stock in any list of "Greatest Films" that are longer than ten, its all about someone's personal opinion, and just because a consensus of magazine readers finds The Godfather to be the best film ever, doesn't mean I do. Remember that old saying about oppinions and exit's on a persons body?

I think everyone should be entitled to give a top ten favorite film list, but beyond that its stretches into an extreme that is a bit ridiculous. Top 500, really? Completely unnecessary.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
    @Will C

Just read the top ten then.

    500?

Wow, I guess they wanted to keep everybody happy.

But I'm not happy. Fight Club Before Godfather II?

    Are they @#%$!! nuts?
  • Homero · 1 year ago
The Dark Knight, Fight Club and Goodfellas beating 2001 was the main thing that bothered me about this list, aside from the lack of Lawrence of Arabia.

The greatest thing about these kind of lists is because I can take them, print them out, check off the one's I've seen and still see that I've missed like 30 equally great movies, which I can then add to my Netflix queue or something.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
Emmm Homero Laurence of Arabia was #57
  • Meepo · 1 year ago
Lol, there's been controversy over The Dark Knight having placed that high. Seriously though, wtf is it doing up on 15? Sure it's fine that it made the top 500, but 15!?

This list isn't credible because they allowed fans to vote on it, and a lot of people don't know the difference between a good movie and a bad movie.
  • Troy · 1 year ago
whats controversial about it. at this point in time, _____ amount of people think the dark knight is one the best movies of all time. you don't like it, don't read the list. go write your own, and put it in your own magazine.
  • Nate · 1 year ago
Okay, since you asked for it, here's my list of the ten greatest films ever made (not necessarily my 10 favorites), which if I wrote tomorrow or yesterday, would probably be different:

    2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick, 1968)
Aguirre, the Wrath of God (Herzog, 1972)
    Apocalypse Now (Coppola, 1979)
    Citizen Kane (Welles, 1941)
    Lawrence of Arabia (Lean, 1962)
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003, Jackson)
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928, Dreyer)
    Persona (1966, Bergman)
    Pulp Fiction (1994, Tarantino)
    Vertigo (1958, Hitchcock)

I will go no further except to say that Raging Bull (Scorses, 1980) and Schindler's List (1993, Spielberg) are interchangeable with Pulp Fiction
  • Sam · 1 year ago
    What, no High School Musical?

Debating these lists are pointless at best yet fun when drunk. Obviously it's an opinion poll, and people disagree with other people's opinion. Print it off, grab your friends that like movies, a few bottles of whiskey and go to town.
  • Cole Abaius · 1 year ago
    @ Sam

You've got the right idea. Except make sure to drink responsibly. Or not. Either way. Just don't drive.

Because it causes global warming. Ride a bike instead.

There's a book called "1000 films to see before you die" which is damn comprehensive (compiled by a a dozen or so film-critics). It has a description of every film listed (and explains WHY its worth seeing, which is handy). It doesn't try to order them either (except by release date), and has a good range of eras and foreign films.
Worth checking out if you havent already.
  • Mladen · 1 year ago
Sorry, "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", not 1000
  • kevinb · 1 year ago
wow this list is highly opinionated (or however it is spelled) instead of fact a clockwork orange should be top 20 and BLOW should be at least top 150 and weres fear and loathing i didnt see it, if its on there can someone tell me were?
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
Fact? You mean like your list? No wait that's opinion and the list is a democratically decided list you happen to disagree with.
  • idunnooo · 12 months ago
Just gonna refer to the rest of the list for a minute: PRETTYYY PISSED CLERKS DIDN'T MAKE THE LIST AT ALLL.....They could've found somewhere for it to go...like,I dunno...number 15? Far out. The Dark Knigt is so overrated. When Heath Legder wasn't in the scene It was a total bore. He was the dark Knight. Should just cross that out and put his name instead. Heath Legder should be number 15 -.-'That movie shouldn't be on the list. Clerks & The Rocky Horror Picture Show should be Oh well My favourite movie, fight club is up there :) so tis all good. & pulp fiction, taxi driver, clockwork orangee...niiicee ;)

Nate, of course this list isn't very credible, have you had a look at their list of top 100 characters?? (I mean, Blade, are you kidding me) I don't think the group of people that came up with this list had a systematic way of ranking these movies. They needed to come up catagories to define what makes a movie great. General ones such as plot, acting, dialogue, popularity etc., and then other catagories that are less about specifics inside the movie and more about opinions (cinematography, iconic scenes, one liners, etc.). I may hate math, but it would be the best way to come up with a list because each movie would have an overall score based on that system. Then if there is a tie between several movies, you could create other catagories that would be film specific to those to movies.

These lists are always fun, in a kind of stupid, obscene way.

But honestly, 300 made it? Shawshank is number 4? Really? Probably because of its mass, crowpleasing appeal (10,000 people voted, in comparison to the 50 critics that voted). But if I'm not mistaken, Shawshank was number 563 in another one of these polls (though I doubt this Empire poll was supposed to be serious list as much as a public stunt).
