Film School Rejects: Editor’s Picks: The Ten Best Movies of 2008

  • Brent · 10 months ago
definately would have put Wall-E #1 and Dark Knight #2...

i dont know what the Whackness was doing in that list, i thought it was good but i wasnt blown away by it.
  • ANGRYBROOMSTICK · 10 months ago
I agree with most of your picks...

Slumdog is a masterpiece. and I am so glad you mentioned SON OF RAMBOW. I am shocked that the film has not generated a lot of buzz. That was one of the most touching films of 2008 and made me bawl like a baby in the ending.

I would add MILK to the list, and I think BENJAMIN BUTTON deserves to be on the list, too.

I am really annoyed that The Wackness never came out in my area. Well, I really need to sign up for Netflix...
  • CrazySphinx · 10 months ago
I totally agree with your list, even the not-so-usual ones. Well, not totally. Son of Rawbow was a cute movie, but it didn't make my list. Also, Primer was better than Timecrimes with an even smaller budget, although Timecrimes is a lot easier to understand. Other than that, I thought it was a great list and most of the movies made my list too.

I love Primer in spite of the fact it should have been titled "Film That Gives Explanation Like Stereo Instructions."
  • drew · 10 months ago
primer didn't come out in '08

How the hell did the film Cole Abaius and I made, "Night Stranger" not make this list? You're a fraud, good sir. A fraud!
  • Cole_Abaius · 10 months ago
Horse Feathers! Sweeney's right. You're a fraud, Miller.
  • Rob_Hunter · 10 months ago
I've seen Night Stranger. Neil made the right call. And I still feel dirty.
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
Oh, bull shit. You did half the audio commentary, remember?
  • Rob_Hunter · 10 months ago
Do screams and the sound of vomiting count as commentary?

I agree 100% with that list. Also, i am supremely grateful to you for including The Wackness in your list. That movie was sorely overlooked and still is. A lot of other top 10 list do not even feature it, and that pisses me off. Again, a very powerful movie.
P.S. im also glad The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button did not feature in the main list. I enjoyed the concept of the movie, however i never connected with any of the characters nor felt any emotion of any sort. Also, why so much sex between Benjamin and Daisy? is that the only way to profess one's love for another person?
  • Neil Miller · 10 months ago
Wait, what? Sex isn't the only way...

Ugh... I've got a lot to learn. :P
  • Sahil · 10 months ago
I sooo agree with what you said about Quantum of Solace. It definitely wasn't Casino Royale and neither was it trying to be. It was a necessary and artistically done Bond film. And for that I enjoyed it.

Am I the only person who thought Wall-E was just ok? I mean it seams that all big production movies are about Global Warming now. When i go to the movies i want to be entertained not belittled because i didn't recycle the cup i was drinking. I want to be captivated by the story, dialogue, action, and performances. Wile Wall-E was a good movie i don't believed it deserves a top-10 spot.
  • Rob_Hunter · 10 months ago
You're not the only one. Wall-E was good, and there's much to admire about it... but it's definitely not Top Ten material. But keep the source of this list in mind... Neil also like The Wackness after all.
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
Agreed. Wall-E would be on my list of most overrated films of 2008.
  • Cole_Abaius · 10 months ago
    When do they not?
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
Rob, you're getting the voice-over work we had you do mixed up with the audio commentary. See, THAT is why we didn't make this list. Oh well, I have a feeling Brian C. Gibson is going to include us in the 15 DVDs You Should've Bought in 2009. Night Stranger is a dark horse for the Oscars.
  • Cole_Abaius · 10 months ago
Ahem...I believe your forgot Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Thus, your list and opinion are invalid. Talking animal movies FTW.
  • DMuff · 10 months ago
I agree with nearly all the films on here, not necessarily the order but I never find a list I totally agree with.

I'm starting to think I'm alone with my opinion of The Fall. I can see the appeal and why you could be so enamored with it's visuals and cinematography. There were some really good scenes, visually speaking. As I said on the top foreign films article, I think it was much more about style than substance.

    MILK?COMMON!
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
Thank you for that update, Drew. That would explain why I watched it at home two years ago. ;)

One thing - Defiance is based completely on lies, Tuvia Bielski and his crew never did fight with Germans, their only tactic was to hide from Nazi troops and rob local villages. Their hands are covered with bloodof local farmers who denied him help. Their only crime was that they didn't have enough for to provide for their own family and couldn't help Tuvia Bielski and his villians.

Don't get fooled, don't be naive - it's a fake story what they showed in the movie.
