Film School Rejects: District 9 Sequel a Possibility, Says Director Neill Blomkamp

  • Joel Bartlett · 3 months ago
As much as I want there to be a sequel I hope they don't make it. I do think it'd hurt the legacy of the initial story. I love how it starts and ends in mystery and intrigue.

Screw that man, First ones made, you can ruin it. SAW 18 didn't ruin the classic first one.. lol Nightmare on Elm St 34 didn't ruin the first one!! lol What im tryin to say is, If this guy makes a sequel, it will either be bad ass or forgotten about, District 9 was an instant Sci-Fi clazzic!! But, thats only my opinion..

P.S. I want Christopher to come back and destroy Corporate America (we saved his kind, why not save us??)

I walked out of the theater wanting nothing but more. However, having a couple of days to let it sink in, I think the film will be better received if it is a stand-alone. Then again, what if District 10 (or whatever it would be called) was the Empire Strikes Back to D9's Star Wars? There's always that possibility.

I Really,Really Love this movie. When the movie was over; I wanted more! I was drawn in from the beginning, to the end. Very original, and very well Directed. I really wanted to help the Aliens fight for their survival, and help them get off this planet. I cant wait for a sequel; if there is one. I hope its the same Director. If not; Peter Jackson or James Cameron would work.

There is definitely room for a sequel. There is definitely more story to be told. And let's remember this is the writer/director talking about making a sequel with the original star, not some studio saying "Hey let's make more money." Blomkamp is saying "Hey lets tell more story."

If you're not psyched for that, well then something is wrong with you.

I think a sequel for District 9 would be awesome. I thought it was common for certain movies to have sequels if they collect double the investment at the box office.

I'm totally on board for this - simply because it's Blomkamp talking about it. If this guy is energized about having more to delve into inside District 10, then I'm energized.

Isn't there just as much room for a prequel? I think it would be interesting to hear the story leading up to the ship coming to Earth and eventually stalling.
  • joelserr · 3 months ago
A prequel would be nice, but Christopher(Alien) coming back with help and getting his people off Earth I think is more appealing. I guess the Director could put in a little prequel scene in the next movie as flashbacks, but the majority of the movie would be the aftermath of District9.

I'd prefer to see him do something else, something bigger in a different world or different situation relating to this world (i.e. we find out where Christopher ends up - maybe he gets followed by MNU somehow?), because I'm not sure that another 2 hours of looking at garbage and news footage would be as entertaining as the first outing.

So Neill, don't get caught up in the buzz - use the momentum to go on and create something different. After all, not many filmmakers get to turn their short into a blockbuster summer movie - unless that's all he's able to come up with??

No I wouldn't like to see a sequel. While slightly entertained by District 9, I wish I would've waited for it on DVD. The open-ended ending killed the entire film for me.

Hmm, Blomkamp, in my opinion, is a genious. So he probably realizes how bad he can screw up district 9. That said, he's not out to just make more money. If he does a sequel, I trust he will do his best to not disappoint. And I can almost promise you, if it is any good, it won't be anything like what people expect.
A logical possibility I see is War of the Worlds, District 9 style. Christopher comes back and (intentionally or not) brings the rest of the alien army out for revenge. And Christopher and Wikus are caught up in the middle of a war they accidently started. Lots of action, but I guess not as much room for the actual story/plot development of District 9 (which is what made the movie good to begin with, not the action). I don't know just throwing out ideas.

A sequel won't ruin the District 9 movie for me. It could ruin the District 9 universe. But I'll still always think of the actual District 9 movie as one of the best movies I've seen in years, regardless if I'm disappointed by a sequel

Sequel? Maybe. Another movie set in this bleakly realistic world he created? Absolutely.

I saw "District 9" last Friday - it is now Sunday and I am still (in my mind) there in District 9! I loved this movie - it was just brilliant! And - YES PLEASE! I would love to see a sequel ... with Wikus and Christopher Johnson, of course. He promised he would return in 3 years - and he will keep his word, I know! But what of Mrs Wikus? Will she still love her husband now he has transmogrified into a "prawn"? (Sorry to use that derogatory term). Will he stay as he is or will he become human again? What of the dastardly MNU? All these questions! I can't bear the suspense - If there is a sequel, I hope we don't have to wait 3 years - I couldn't bear it!

The Movie was so beautifully created that although it leaves the audience guessing about what happened next, it still feels good that at last it portrayed some good intentions of human race in the end.

Only, there remains an uneasy feeling about the fate of leading man of the movie, VAN. If Mr.Neill can take it further, and show us what really happened next, whether the promises were kept ?? it would only turn DISTRICT series into an epic Piece of Excellence.

    Remember "The Matrix" ???

I WOULD WAIT FOR IT!!! AS LONG AS IT TAKES. . .
