Film School Rejects: Discuss: Will You Go See ‘The Dark Knight’ Again?

  • Jordan Raup · 10 months ago
Some of my friends haven't see in it in IMAX yet so I'll go with them
  • Mack41 · 10 months ago
Same with me. Some of my friends missed it cause they were at camp and want to see it on the big screen. And as good as it was on Blu Ray, it was amazing in IMAX and I can't wait to see it again on the big screen
  • Ryan · 10 months ago
I created a Facebook Group for my friends, invited five people, we now have 36 people coming... It helped that I added a bunch of research/articles about IMAX and Dark Knight in IMAX...

I'm sick of TDK to be honest. Ledger's joker wasn't that great. It's easy to play a guy who shows no emotions! I won't be at IMAX, I'm sorry. If Heath gets a bigger shout out that the likes of Paul Newman at the Oscars, I'll be pissed...If he gets anything CLOSE to Paul Newman I'll be pissed!
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
While I appreciate you strongly opposing the majority, I disagree completely. I was hyper-aware of the buzz Ledger was receiving, therefore I put my skeptic goggles on. I was blown away by what he did. I think there was plenty of emotion in his performance, it just wasn't in a conventional form. That's what made it so great. There was no understanding his character. He was pure chaos.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 10 months ago
What a terrible sentiment to want one person to get a bigger 'shout out'? than another. I mean terrible that Newman died but he lived a long life and I think it's safe to say he'd be first to say what happened to Ledger was a tragedy. Both will be missed and revered for years to come.
  • Mack41 · 10 months ago
I'm not sick of TDK, but I do find Ledger's joker overrated. I feel that Aaron Eckhart's performance as Two Face was much better than Ledger's performance. Two Face started out as the squeky clean white knight of Gotham than transformed into this evil character who absolutely did not care what his actions would bring about so long as he got revenge. I did like the Joker and felt Ledger did a great job, but Eckhart does not get enough credit in my opinion...
  • Joshi · 10 months ago
I don't fully agree, but I will admit, I'm rather saddened that Eckhart isn't getting the praise he deserves for playing an amazing character. Wayne was played a little too woodenly for my liking, so he's literally the only main character who goes through something of an emotional arc and he plays it off amazingly.

Oh, him and Gordon of course, but that goes without saying.
  • Omek · 10 months ago
Seriously man? You thought he wasn't that great? Wow... I thought he was amazing. He was playing a chaotic lunatic, what did you expect?
  • Nevernude · 10 months ago
Im there! I've seen this movie 7 times, and own the blu-ray, but i'll be seeing it again. What else is there to do on a friday evening?
  • Aleš · 10 months ago
Saw it 3 times in my home country Slovenia!
I am coming to US somewhere around February and I will definetly gonna go see it in IMAX!!!
    US here I come!!!

The timing of the release has more to do with the Oscar nominations being announced on the 22nd than it does it being the anniversary of Heath's death. The real reason WB is doing this is to position itself better with the other Oscar nominees.
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
    Exactly.
  • Cpt J · 10 months ago
The movie doesn't stand a chance for a nom though... other than the possible and most likely best supporting
  • R.E. Gold · 10 months ago
LA Times predicts it will pick up a Best Picture and Director nomination.
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
I was going to mention that. The film is getting plenty of momentum heading into the nomination period. It has already won many of the Critics' Awards as Best Picture. So yeah, it actually stands a chance. A damn good one. It is likely a Best Picture candidate, also getting the nod for best director and best adapted screenplay. And Heath Ledger is a lock for a nomination and has to be considered the frontrunner in the Best Supporting Actor category.
  • Cpt J · 10 months ago
Again... I'm standing by my statement. Judgeing by it's performance at the G.G. I'd say the most u will see is the supporting. Nolan did a great job but the picture lives on fan hype and like several others I will end by saying the dark knight was good but in no way was best picture worthy. Regardless of what the LA Times predicts
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
The Golden Globes are not what you should judge Academy Award buzz by. Tom Cruise got nominated for crying out loud. And you can have your opinion, we're all entitled to it. But you're wrong when you assume The Dark Knight "doesn't stand a chance for a nom" in any other category besides Best Supporting Actor. Will you be willing to eat crow in a few weeks?
  • Cpt J · 10 months ago
And... with the nom's finally out, I would just like to thank the Academy for proveing my point. It was not best picture or best director worthy. I lived on fan hype, and besides the loss of the most important noms, It doesn't stand a very good chance in the ones it's in. It's best chance was make up, and that's going to ben button easily. So i'd just like to thank you for competeing in this shouting match... it was fun...
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
And with your latest comment out, I would just like to point out that you need to learn how to spell and use punctuation properly. ;) I kid. and this wasn't a case of a Shouting Match, dear boy. It only proves that The Academy is out of touch, like so many other moviegoers. The Reader? Haha, right. A film that got mixed reviews beats out a film that was almost universally applauded for a Best Picture nomination. Face it, The Oscars hates sci-fi and comic films. They also hate giving awards posthumously to actors but they will have to suck it up. You think Heath Ledger won't win? Take the joint out of your mouth, sir, and wake up.
  • Cpt J · 10 months ago
yeah... See all I herd in there was, "Blah, blah, blah... How am I so bad at debating... Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I was wrong. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I have terrible taste in movies and apparently only saw one film this summer and it was the dark knight! The best movie ever, but the Academy is wrong because my opinion is SO much better than theres! I HAVE A BIAST OPINION!" Dude... First, this is a shouting match because were still going at it (duh...) Second, you were wrong. The academy doesn't hate sci-fi films and comic films. Your problem is that you, like every other super fan in the world, believe that the dark knight was the greatest film ever made and Ledger gave the best performance of all time (or at least that's how you act) . But it isn't like that. Like I said in my first comment, the movie was good, hell it was even a GREAT movie! But it is not nor ever will be best picture worthy. (where did I ever say that Ledger isn't going to win. He is going to be the winner. I said that eariler too, so I kind of wonder how close you actually read these things before you start arguing with people over them). I saw it three times in theaters. I own the bluray. I love every movie Christopher Nolan has ever done. Don't get me wrong, I know about and respect the film, my point is that this is over now. You were wrong, and you should just accept it. Also, your not that much older than me. ;) (i can do the wink face too slugger)
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
Wow, tell me how ya really feel. Lol. I'd love to "shout" about this longer, but actually I wouldn't. Got things to do. Moving on to another topic ... ;)

And I don't think The Dark Knight was the best movie ever made. Great assumption though. Take care, Pooh bear.
  • AngieBatgirl · 10 months ago
I'm going to see it in IMAX once and maybe 3 more times in the regular theater to bring my total to an even 10
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
Hells yeah. I am going to see it at least 2 more times.
  • Joshi · 10 months ago
If it's released again in the UK and I get a chance to see it on IMAX, since I didn't before, then totally. But otherwise, I have it on DVD, I've got a 42inch HD ready arriving soon and if I save some cash and buy a blu-ray player, I think I can get a pretty decent TDK experience in my own home and I wouldn't even have to spend it with annoying talking audience members and little kids... I'd pay over £700 for that. ;)
  • Stephen · 10 months ago
No I saw it in the theatre the first time out and own the blu-ray so I see no need to go the IMAX and see it again. It was an alright movie but I didn't love it as much as alot of people seem to. Ledger's Joker was interesting but after catching Nicholson's on TV again last week I have to say that I prefer his Joker.
  • RobertFure · 10 months ago
The advertising campaign should be this:
"Go see The Dark Knight so Titanic isn't the number one film of all time anymore."
  • shirley · 10 months ago
i would love to see it again!
  • Marc · 10 months ago
    amen to that
  • Krystal · 10 months ago
I've seen it once in IMAX & got the DVD for Christmas, but I'm soooo excited that it's coming back to Canada!! Planning to see it this Fri. in IMAX, plus hopefully 1 more time after that. I can't wait!!! It would be incredible if DK sinks Titanic a 2nd time.
  • Andy · 10 months ago
You bet your ass I'll see it in the IMAX again. My friend and I saw it three times in IMAX before and will be happy to see it again Friday night. Seeing it in IMAX gives you sort of a 'buzz' that we could use up in Michigan right now. We cannot wait.

Also, as for performances in the movie going under the radar, Gary Oldman...like the rug in Lebowski...he tied the whole room together. He was fantastic. Watch him next time...awesome.

I hope this happens every year...bring back something great from last year again, as opposed to trudging around in the sewer that January through April generally is.
  • OhMightyVlog · 10 months ago
How anyone can see the same movie 3 times is a mystery to me. once or twice and I am done.
  • Unregistered · 10 months ago
It is pointless to compare Nicholson and Ledger's performances. The Joker is a one-dimensional character and two-dimensional at most. If they are going to give Ledger a posthumous Oscar, they should give Robert Englund the lifetime achievement award for playing Freddy Krueger. But people love flashy roles.
  • Matt Bacon · 10 months ago
Agreed. It's sad he died I admit, but the level of acting needed to be the joker wasn't incredibly high. It just needed to be good, and it was. Ledger may have aced it, but he didn't have to do much the ace it either...
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
Remember that statement next time you watch Batman and Robin, where other Batman villains were pathetically portrayed. Good acting doesn't just happen because you're given a part.
  • OhMightyVlog · 10 months ago
IMAX is not worth the price or the hype, I got the movie for Christmas on DVD so I am going to keep my hard earned money in the wallet this time.
  • The Rake · 10 months ago
No. I don't care enough. A great film experience at first viewing. But now we already own it on DVD, so can't justify the additional expense. For more film info, check out our site at thefilmnest.com. Peace!
  • 790 · 10 months ago
    Man this film is overated.

Had some great scenes that I ff to when I watch the DVD. I'm good. Imax is overated too.
  • David G · 10 months ago
Ledgers take on the Joker was nice. He was given a darker script for it but he put alot into it. His physical humor was great. Coming out that hospital and trying to mess with the detonator. Little stuff like that made me light up everytime the Joker was on screen. Nicholson was Nicholson doing Joker. No comparison. He was all his previous crazy characters from before that Batman movie. A lot of good actors have done bad acting too.
  • Andy · 10 months ago
The arc of backlash is so wonderfully predictable as some of these comments attest.

We are now in the 'full bore backlash' stage...since over the summer everyone was praising how entertained they were by Heath Ledger's take on The Joker, people need to come out of the woodwork proclaiming that they didn't like what everyone else liked. My guess is that it has something to do with events like people getting together over the holidays and having that lame uncle or smarmy cousin talk about how cool he was. Or maybe too many Halloween costumes or something.

Either way, people need to distance themselves from things that are popular, no matter their merit. So here we are. I can proudly say I was entertained like crazy, and I'm happy a LOT of people went to see it and enjoy the guy's last performance...even if my mother in law is aware of how much it made.
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
Exactly. You knew it was only a matter of time before Heath Ledger's Joker wasn't "cool" anymore. I am so tired of people liking something until everyone else likes it, then proceeding to call it "overrated." Heath Ledger gave the performance of a lifetime. Accept it and hate on something that deserves it, like Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Now THAT is shit.
  • Andy · 10 months ago
    Amen brother!

I forgot to mention that point...there is sooooooo much more stuff to hate on or at least diminish than a great actor's last great performance. I mean, we live in a world where there's a third 'Underworld' movie AND a sequel to Steve Martin's 'Pink Panther' on it's way.
  • Adam_Sweeney · 10 months ago
How that is possible, the two films you mentioned being made, is a greater crime than any The Joker has committed.
