Film School Rejects: Discuss: What is the Best Coen Brothers Movie?

  • Troy · 1 year ago
    The Big Lebowski.

    The rest suck, the end.
  • Cole Abaius · 1 year ago
I know that no one else agrees with this, but my favorite has always been Barton Fink. Everything works. John Goodman is as good as I've ever seen him, and the crumbling hotel is an incredible, stylistic metaphor for the soul of Hollywood. Or any business really. Plus, they really work hard to put their characters into terrible situations.

If I had to rank, which I do.

    Barton Fink
    No Country
    Lebowski
    Miller's Crossing
    Fargo
    O Brother
    Blood Simple.
    The rest...
  • Neil Miller · 1 year ago
Oh, come on now Troy -- you can't just come in and say "the rest suck"... I agree on The Big Lebowski, but I have no idea why you would say the rest suck. Have you not seen any of their other movies, or something?
  • CapKwik · 1 year ago
The Big Lebowski is an awesome movie. I have the special edition from 2 years ago, but I couldn't resist running out and getting the bowling ball collectors edition this week. My top 4 of theirs are:

    The Big Lebowski
    No Country for Old Men
    Fargo
    O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Anytime someone makes a blanket comment like "the rest suck", all credibility is thrown out.

However, I must agree about Lebowski. It really is one of my personal favorite movies of all time. It's hard not to discuss that movie when talking about the Coen brothers' best efforts.

I love the Coen Bros. Their best film is probably The Big Lebowski, but I just want to go public with one thing: I liked No Country for Old Men, but I think Intolerable Cruelty is a much better film. It personally resonates with me much more than NCFOM did, and it always puts me in a good mood and makes me happy. I realize that NCFOM wasn't trying to do that, and it's not a requisite that any movie do that, but NCFOM did not effect or engage me emotionally or intellectually in the ways that Big Lebowski, Barton Fink, Fargo, Intolerable Cruelty, and Raising Arizona did.

I have to abstain from answering because i havn't seen Miller's Crossing. And I can't seem to find it anywhere on dvd, not at HMV, Best Buy, or even Columbia House for frig sakes.

Can anyone let me know where i can pick it up on dvd?

Not surprisingly, Cole is way off base with his ranking. The correct order of best to worst is as follows:

    The Big Lebowski
    No Country For Old Men
    Fargo
    The Hudsucker Proxy
    Blood Simple
    Burn After Reading
    Barton Fink
    Raising Arizona
    The Ladykillers
    O Brother Where Art Thou
    Intolerable Cruelty
    The Man Who Wasn't There
    Millers Crossing
  • Kevin Greta · 6 months ago
You're a straight jacktard with Miller Crossing being the worst. Lady Killers is. It might as well not be a Coen movie. MORONNNNNNNNNNNNN!
  • Nick C · 1 year ago
My personal favorite is Miller's Crossing.

If I was to go with a Top 5 after that I'd say it goes: Big Lebowski. Barton Fink. Blood
Simple. Fargo. Raising Arizona. I'd also like to defend The Ladykillers, since I'm the only
person I know who thinks it's hysterical.

I have to rank it as shown:

    1. No Country for Old Men
    2. The Big Lebowski
    3. The Hudsucker Proxy
    4. Fargo
    5. O Brother Where Art Thou
  • ddog · 1 year ago
Personally i would have to say that blood simple is their best work though my favorite coen film is hands down a tie with fargo and the big lebowski (lebowski fest is a can't miss event) .

in order i would probably go with top 5 best coen films.

    Blood Simple
    Fargo
    The big lebowski
    Millers Crossing
No country for old men (NCFOM is a funny abbreviation)
    Raising Arizona
    Barton Fink
    o' brother
    The man who wasn't there
    Intolerable Cruelty
The rest were subpar in my opinion. . .

Lookin forward to seeing burn after reading today

    This is impossible to do!

    Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
    The Big Lebowski
    Barton Fink
    NCFOM
    Fargo
    Miller's Crossing
    The Hudsucker Proxy
  • HempKnight757 · 1 year ago
1st off JJ like u said credibility right out the window. Lebowski ruled, but I also did enjoy some others Troy. 2nd off I still haven't seen Ladykillers, but I have heard good things. 3rd off I think there should be more discussions like this.

    1. No Country for Old Men
    2. The Big Lebowski
    3. Fargo
    4. Raising Arizona
  • HempKnight757 · 1 year ago
    5. Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
  • ddog · 1 year ago
This is a great topic! there should be more like this one. Great to hear poeples opinions and why they mode those choices.
  • Cole Abaius · 1 year ago
JMoney, you can get Miller's Crossing through Blockbuster online. Not sure about Netflix, though. I would check there.

And how could I forget about the Hudsucker Proxy? Damn, such a good movie.
  • jacob · 1 year ago
Big Lebowski would have to be my favorite. none of you have the man who wasn't there on your lists? am i the only one who liked that film or something?
  • John · 1 year ago
The Big Lebowski was the Coens best film! It was just hilarious, witty and well written!
I noticed many of you said Fargo. Personally, I didnt enjoy that film and didnt realize why it was so great and won all these awards!
Can someone please explain to me the beauty or creativity in it?!
  • MackB · 1 year ago
I've got to go with O Brother, Where Art Thou. It's a great period piece and full of magical realism. I love the telling of Ulysses during the Great Depression. It comes across equal parts screwball comedy and epic adventure. That being said

    1. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
    2. Miller's Crossing
    3. Big Lebowski
    4. No Country for Old Men
    5. Fargo
  • NYC · 1 year ago
For me, The Big Lebowski wins hands down. I've seen that movie 100 times and kinda want to watch it again right now...
  • Nate · 1 year ago
No question, they raised the bar with No Country
  • Floyd · 1 year ago
i have seen all of their films, and am a big fan of the coens, but i think they have done some not good at all movies. and i think barton fink is greatly overrated, a lot of people haven't even seen it and are posting here. my top 5 coen bros. films
    1.Fargo
    2.No Country for Old Men
    3.Barton Fink
    4.The Big Lebowski
    5.Blood Simple
  • Wade · 1 year ago
Fargo and No Country are my 2 favorites except i couldnt decide which is better cause there 2 very different movies
  • Jell · 1 year ago
I've hated every Coen brothers film I've ever seen. Thing is I didn't realize they were Coen brothers films at first. Fargo sucked. Raising Arizona sucked. Barton Fink sucked, Lebowski sucked and The Hudsucker Proxy sucked. I didn't realize these were Coen Bros until I saw a list of the movies they had done on wiki and so I finally realized that these were not just random movies that sucked ass, but because they were made by the same guys.

I've only seen (and in this order from first coen bro movie to most recent) o brother (which i thought was okay, however need to see it again as I wasnt firmiliar with the coen bro's style at the time, no country for old men which i thought was very good however at times too deep, burn after reading which i thought was hilarious and witty, fargo which i thought was absolutely perfect, intolerable cruelty which was soo goofy it was entertaining, and raising arizona which was funny and over the top but kind of dissapointed me,

my top 5 ( and rememeber these are the only I've seen, and am going to the store to get most others and borrow from friends)

    1. fargo
    2. burn after reading
    3. no country for old men
    4. intolerable cruelty
    5. raising arizona
