Film School Rejects: Discuss: What Did You Think of Terminator Salvation?

  • Ape tooth · 6 months ago
It was fun, albiet heartless entertainment.
  • Agent M · 6 months ago
Good start to a new trilogy. CGI on point (did not rely on it for every scene-- if they did, then they did a great job). Good casting. Anton looks like a young Connor (as Furrlong did in T2). Story tries to keep with continuity and it works at times. classic lines are used. Marcus Wright was a good addition to the story' sub plot of man getting second chances for the sins he's committed.
If you're going in to this movie expecting Cameron's terminators, then you'll be disappointed. McG surprised me. Bale is Bale. You either like him or you don't. He's a great Connor.
  • Prush · 6 months ago
It was just rather bad. Some CGI was too obvious. Some obvious quotes(In comparison to Star Trek). The whole logic of Marcus did not make sense. Skynet predicted to create a human hybrid BEFORE it existed? The whole logic of the time travel did not work out well. I was also waiting for the line "Kyle you are my father"
  • Jay DV · 6 months ago
Some of the action sequences were shot well, like the helicopter scene in the beginning of the film. The CGI wasn't as obvious as, say, Indiana Jones: KotCS.

However, I thought some scenes were ridiculous and quite silly, especially the exposition-heavy scene in which Skynet basically tells Marcus its ENTIRE plan to kill John Connor and Kyle Reese near the end of the film.

I didn't think Bale's performance was bad, although it was one-note. There was a noteworthy scene in which Connor, over the radio, begs the resistance to stand down. I thought Bale was great in that one scene and was the only one in which he wasn't yelling or whispering with his raspy voice.
  • Synoptic · 6 months ago
You guys have valid points. But come on, the movie was ridiculously well made.
Some CGI was obvious, agreed. But they are portraying a completely different world, with human looking machines, giant robots, nuclear war/fallout, and explosions galore. It's bound to not LOOK ENTIRELY REALISTIC with our nit-picking eyes.

Bale was a great John Conner, although somewhat "one-note." John Conner is a leader, and a soldier, there isn't much character in that. He's been hardened by war throughout his entire life, he's not going to break down and cry. And the final call to the Resistence was indeed his best scene in the movie. I totally bought it.

Overall, its got some plot gaps, and some CGI problems at parts, but seriously, which Terminator didn't?
The movie was captivating, enthralling, action-packed and VERY well done, from start to finish end of story.
  • liquid terminator · 6 months ago
all movies are going to be well made. with a 200 million budget the movie BETTER look good. a great film isnt about how great the set pieces look or how good the effects are, its if we, the audience, feel a real human connection towards the characters and actually care about their plight and their struggles in this fantasy world. a movie can have bad cinematography and shoddy cgi, but if it is well written and performed that aspect will elevate the movie and make it good whereas great cgi and great cinematography cant save bad acting and a shoddy script.
  • dino · 6 months ago
I enjoyed it, good action flick, no way it was as bad as the review given here.
  • Troy · 6 months ago
The movie was very well made...

But it was perhaps one of the least involving, least engaging movies I've seen in a long time. I just didn't care about what was going on. I had no idea a movie with so many explosions could be so dull.

Gonna have to agree with the Rejects' review - what a colossal letdown.
  • Zach · 6 months ago
This movies awesome, i rate this a perfect 10 out of 10, this movies is just as good and T1 and T2 and way better than T3, i look forward to more terminator movies,
  • Wizard 03 · 6 months ago
I'd have to really disagree with Cole's review on this one. Aside from the shoehorned "classic" lines and most of the physics, I thought it was quite good. I really enjoyed Marcus Wright's story more than I expected. Connor's was pretty generic by comparison. Overall I'd give it a B- at the least, B otherwise.
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
I really enjoyed it...I'm glad they finally moved away from the formula from the first two movies...the biggest reason the third movie didn't work besides the awful writing...I'm shocked they brought back the writers on this one and it shows...luckly McG does an excellent job with the action scenes and the overall look of the film...when it comes to the plot holes Transformers had a lot more problems and I don't remember geekdom really coming down on Michael Bay for it....they seemed to eat it up and asked for more hence Revenge of The Fallen...I expect the same here they did what they set out to do...making a movie that doesn't fit the mold of the first films but honoring them....people should understand James Cameron didn't write or direct this so don't expect it to be anything like his movies....character development was only limited because of the script and time restraints

my main issues were with Will Smith's daughter, her character really didn't need to be there....the ending was put together haphazardly because of the leak...we really didn't get to see enough fighting between the Resistance and Skynet...whatever people or critics say this movie is a massive improvement on T3

I'd like to see more of McG's vision of Terminator I just hope they've learned from their mistakes and spend the extra time coming up with a strong story before jumping into production...I expect new writers for the next film.. also not to cop-out and bring back the gore and violence...it's not the second coming of Cameron but it made up for Wolverine and Angels & Demons

alright christopher m! people liked transformers because not only did it have great action it had a lot of heart. the dialogue was corny in a good way and delivered laughs and lightheartedness juxtaposed with impending doom. salvation had the great action scenes, as expected, but the characters all fell flat. the script was deeply flawed. worthington and yelchin did fine jobs with what they were given, but you can't do much more than that when the script is so bad. christian bale was a big disappointment, but that was also due to the script making him so one dimensional and boring. on top of that he basically did the batman voice whenever he whispered or yelled which was really stupid. and there wont be more gore in the sequels because itll stay pg13 to keep as much dough rolling in as possible. overall the movie had no drive meaning at the end nothing was resolved none of the characters went on a journey or discovered anything and we are all back at square one. nothing really happened in salvation. there was no rhyme or reason for any of the action.
  • _Christopher_M · 6 months ago
the characters in Transformers had just as much heart...there was an overload of robots and humans that I really didn't catch all their names (humans) that if they had died I wouldn't have cared at all...the only human that had any honest personality was Bernie Mac...too bad he passed on I would have enjoyed to see him return....I kept having Even Steven flashbacks watching Shia "act"....the robots looked the same during the big fight and couldn't tell some of them apart...both are flawed action films...people enjoyed Salvation for the same reasons others liked Transformers....I have to commend the casting of Salvation they hired actors based on their abilities rather than if they look good on camera...which Bay does very often...he casts actors for their look rather than talents....i do agree that the story is awful from Salvation..but that has nothing to do with the director or actors...it might have a lot more to do with the writers strike that effected the script's re-write process before production...I don't think a studio would ever spend 200million plus on a R rated film..if they make the next film R expect the budget to be 100-130million....

granted I hated the opening scene with Worthington and Carter...along with it having the worst title sequence I think I've ever seen in a theater...it looked like it was fanmade...the action scenes made up for all it's flaws
  • Aleric · 6 months ago
Well its Official, I saw it yesterday and I liked it a lot. It had problems but what movie doesn't.
  • Greg · 6 months ago
I give it 9 out of 10.....excellent start to a new Terminator series. It's better than the canceled SCC and I liked that a lot. Maybe I am just a big Terminator fan but this was in no way a disappointment like 3 was.
  • MA_ · 6 months ago
How can I describe how mad I am at the movie right at this moment? Lets see, have you ever seen a helicopter out run a nuclear blast before ... From a filmmaking standpoint this movie is a horrible mess. I was one of the few people who kept defending McG and this movie, saying "how can it be worst than T3?". Apparently I was wrong. McG can't seem to make a good shot list if he tried. Can't remember the last movie I saw that had so many random shitty shots put together. The story is weak at best. It's like they couldn't figure out throughout the movie who should we follow Connor or Marcus. The only parts that were likable were the assault on skynet at the end and Arnold's cameo. Everything else made me cringe throughout the movie. The film felt like a 5-year-old blind kid edited it.
  • liquid terminator · 6 months ago
agreed. it didnt feel complete. salvation felt completely strung together moving from action sequence to bad acting scene to action sequence. there was no flow or pacing at all.
  • jacob · 6 months ago
you actually liked arnold's "cameo?" I thought that was the worst part of the film. They did a terrible job with the cgi and when I saw it, I couldn't stop laughing.
  • B.Shet · 6 months ago
I liked the movie. It really surprised me since I didn't expect much from McG and felt like this franchise was a dead. It is a good movie, not great by any means (7 out of 10). The only thing that really pissed me off was FSR's rating - I don't think it deserves the same rating as Dance Flick. I mean how do you even justify doing that? Dance Flick created a whole new level of shit and is in a very special category reserved for The Love Guru and anything the Wayans brothers touch.
  • craig · 6 months ago
I thought the movie was very mediocre and although had the action, effects, sound, just wasn't a good movie. No story, Bale's voice got annoying. Worthignton was really good and will become a name soon. I just think there was a lot left out of the movie we needed. If you go in expecting what you get you will be fine. Here is my video review on my blog if anyone has interest. http://themoviebanter.com/2009/05/22/snap-video-r...

    @B. Shet I think I would go even lower to a 6.5
  • John Strickland · 6 months ago
I really dug this movie. I really enjoyed Anton Yelchin's performance. He's was spot-on brilliant.

Christian Bale did a good job with John Connor. I could sense a progression in Connor from T2 to now where he started as a wise-cracking brat, and as the films went on, he started to shed that bratty attitude. And we get to now, and I believe we've gotten a pretty accurate character depiction of that iconic shot in T2 of John Connor with the scar.

Sam Worthington's character was obviously the main character, and I thought this was pretty cool, because I wasn't expecting it. It made the point that John Connor wasn't alone in the resistance, and that was something I was scared they weren't going to do, seeing as they cast a huge star like Bale in the Connor role.

The action was spot-on. There were some obvious Children of Men influences in the "one-take" helicopter crash as well as other places, and while they were well-done, they felt tacked on. Other than those few scenes, I loved the action, as well as the spectacular Special Effects.

And, I gotta be honest, when Connor turned on the boombox, and it was You Could Be Mine by Guns n' Roses, directly from Terminator 2, I geeked out. That was great, even better than the Arnie cameo in my opinion.

This movie isn't better than Terminator 2. I don't think it was trying to be. There was honesty to this picture that I don't see very often in big summer action sequels.

    I'd give it a B+.
  • Aaron · 6 months ago
I really enjoyed this one. Sure the script needed some more work and some things needed to be more fleshed out, but the good outweighs the bad. The first two are still much better, but this is a worthy addition to the series and an improvement over 3. I give it an 8/10.
  • Matthew · 6 months ago
I really enjoyed it. Much better then T3.
  • Colb · 6 months ago
The action was 'okay' at best, the cgi was meh, Christian Bale wasnt very good, compared to his recent roles, and worst of all the last 15 minutes was awful.

The only redeeming part imo, is Kyle Reese's character.
  • FirstPartyPanda · 6 months ago
I like how we're complaining about plot holes and lack of story in a movie that's essentially about people fighting robots in the future. It gets me every time when i see people talking about plot holes in transformers, they're giant robots fighting each other, nobody is expecting an oscar for best screenplay, all we want is decent enough dialogue to get us through to the next scene of hot robot on robot action. Same goes for this movie, you're not watching Terminator to learn something about yourself and fall in love with the characters, you're watching it for explosions and fight sequences.
  • Ronnie_S · 6 months ago
I like the movie as a fun popcorn movie. My biggest beef was the expository. I couldn't help but to try to put the pieces together while watching the film; taking me out of the experience.
Why does Cyberdyne exist in 2003. Wasn't it destroyed in 1995?
The Marcus Wright stuff was a little fucked up and I got lost. How does this play with time travel?
If Cyberdyne had the means to create such a sophisticated Terminator (Marcus) to begin with, why did Skynet bother to even produce bulky T-600s or even T-800s?
Yadda yadda yadaa. There's so much to bring up.
Anyway, I find it funny that a lot of movies have too much exposition, but I needed more in this one. A movie that is part of a broader mythology needs that.
  • Tenika · 6 months ago
Sam Worthington completely commanded the film from Bale and everyone. I thought Bale was a little to Batman sounding for me if that makes sense. Overall I enjoyed the entertainment, even though it was mindless entertainment.
  • VICE · 6 months ago
I just saw the movie and all i have to say is this-
Somewhere, deep inside, Terminator Salvation may be a good film. But it's so unabashedly Hollywood, such a construct of too many artistic styles, storylines, unrealistic physics, chase scenes, contracts and heavy-handed metaphors—not to mention terrible script writing—that it may have simply forgotten how to be good. Quite simply, it's just too busy being a movie to be entertaining.
T3 was a lousy film, but at least its fatalistic ending stuck with you. At the end of Terminator Salvation, I left the theater gagging on the world's most expensive Hallmark card, questioning why I was supposed to give a damn in the first place.
  • D. Desmond · 6 months ago
I was ready to be disappointed, but damnit, I found myself enjoying it!! Yeah, it fumbles the ball often and fails to score a field goal with a rather horrid ending, but damned if you don't enjoy yourself along the way. A surprisingly good installment and good start to a new trilogy (as long as McG doesn't go with that STUPID "Machines come back in time plot").
  • 790 · 6 months ago
Anyone notice how obvious the final act was taken almost per scene from T2's climax in the steel mill,?

The film has major problems, it was ok, but not epic. The writng was comic book level.

Warning: do not buy the Terminator Salvation video game! Its a total piece of crp !!!!
  • 790 · 6 months ago
Ronnie_S, Skynet had to have sent a Terminator back in time that infiltrated Cyberdyne and made sure Marcus was created. Maybe that's a deleted scene?

Anyone else have any theories on that?
  • Gern · 6 months ago
Bless you guys for finding things to like about this movie... but goddamn did I hate it. I think I hate it the more and more I think about it. There was nothing to get a attached to here. Nothing. It was all just explosions and loud noises. No characters, no arcs, no real plot, no heart. Nothing. Oh, they tried... but they failed miserably. I've seen Sci-Fi original movies that have been more engaging than this. This movie made Terminator 3 look like Terminator 2. I actually couldn't wait for this movie to end. What a waste.
  • Benji · 6 months ago
    1) If you think this movie was heartless, mindless, senseless, not engaging, etc - you don't understand the story or you don't have a pulse. 2) If you are still arguing plot holes about any of the Terminator movies, you really have to get a life (thank you FirstPartyPanda). 3) If you go by the name Liquid Terminator - you are a doucher. What's your problem man?

Of course John Connor's emotion is "one-track." He has one thing on his mind and has had one thing on his mind his whole life: SURVIVAL. If you think he is going to be chasing ass, crying because he broke a girl's heart and realized he loves her and feels bad, or is going to hi-five everyone when they blow up Skynet's presence in San Fran - wake up.

This film took the theme "There is no fate but what we make" and took it to a whole new level. It's the same thing that makes me feel sorry for all you naysayers. You get out of life what you want, and if you don't want something good...what's the point?
  • daProf · 6 months ago
So, I guess Terminator now falls into the Transformers category of "It's all about Robots and explosions, to hell with the story and plot." That mindset is what you'd expect from people who are incapable of even an ounce of abstract thought. James Cameron's Terminator films were intense action films, yes, but they STILL managed to establish a well thought out and structured story, wherein you actually found yourself CARING for the characters onscreen. Terminator Salvation had great action, but it fails to make you care, and if you bring up the "It's about fighting robots and stuff, not about characters and story" argument, well, it's an indictment of your cognitive capabilities.

Just because people ask for their "summer blockbusters" to have more than visual eye candy, it doesn't mean they are asking for some Oscar worthy life altering script. Terminator 2, IronMan, TDK, The Bourne Films, proved that an action film does NOT have to be all action.
  • FirstPartyPanda · 6 months ago
I'm not saying that an action movie can't be good, it's only when it is clearly going to be a pure action movie that people still feel the need to complain when the movie is lacking in the plot department. Some movies can surprise movie goers in the depth of the story such as with TDK. Clearly terminator savlation was going to be a pure action movie when McG directs and Common is one of the stars, or when Micheal Bay directs an explosion transforming into another explosion. these movies aren't The Wrestler or Slumdog, and the general population realizes this and goes to the movie looking for a mind numbing good time not for an artistic foray into emotion. to conlcude, your attack on the intelligence of others based off of their willingness to accept an action movie for an action movie only goes to show that you want to make yourself feel better by attempting to show everyone how smart by criticizing. The movie was good, the plot was decent and followed the overall story well, for the most part the actors were good, and the cgi was top notch. This movie was a B, not amazing but a good summer movie.
  • seanpfinn · 6 months ago
Overall, this film was quality. It had a captivating story, great action, and phenomenal CGI. The problem, I think, that people had with this film was that people were expecting way to much from it. Given the bad taste T3 left in everyone's mouth, people were expecting this Terminator to be akin to the second coming of Christ and when it wasn't, people felt that they were let down. Reviews poured in and proceeded to rip the film apart. Granted there were plot holes, but when the story your given revolves around the fact that John Connor from the future sent his own father back in time to protect his mother which subsequently led to his birth, there were very few things McG could have done to fix the story so it made sense, but kept true to the story and didn't piss off the die hard fan base. But back to the reviews, people are being extremely unfair and overly critical, including our very own Cole Abaius, proving the age old adage that critics know jack shit. It was great "popcorn" flick, as its called, but it's also set the stage for a new trilogy, the possibilities of which are limitless.
  • Neil Miller · 6 months ago
Here's the problem: "popcorn flicks" are supposed to also be fun, exciting, visually stunning.

This film is none of the above. As someone who derives much joy from watching things blow up on screen, I can say with certainty that this film was not fun. It was just a series of action sequences (framed with mediocre camera work) that was strung together with minimal character work. I've never seen a film with a more bland and boring set of action sequences. Big time disappointment.
  • Icarus2dsun · 6 months ago
For the people who enjoyed this movie, I ask you to review that opinion in about two weeks when a new movie comes out. I notice that there is this trend to like movies cause that's the newest thing out and one of the better thing to watch for that week. Terminator Salvation was NOT a good movie. It was NOT the worst movie by any stretch but it was very flawed. They were characters in this movie that didn't need to be there at all; Bryce Dallas Howard, Common, Moonblood.

This movie needed to be taut and on point for this to be really good. Instead it opted for alot of notable faces. They served no purpose except fluff. The Sam Worthington, Christian Bale of course, and Anton Yelchin characters were necessary. Everyone else was interchangeable, and because they were, you could have put unknowns so you were not distracted by characters you thought were going to do something and then.......... Have nothing happen. I give this movie a 6 out of 10. Could have been a 9 but they failed on so many other levels but those were my main grips with this movie.
  • DJ · 6 months ago
The action sequences were impressive, albeit unbelievable at times. McG did a good job for his background but is that really talent or a big budget that afforded him the ability to make his vision come to life? I don't know, but as summer popcorn action film it achieved it purpose.

As a well written film it bombed. Bale was wasted-bad dialogue, not enough to do, and he looked completely uninterested. Sam Worthington did an ok job but he suffered from bad writing as well and the whole storyline involving a love interest felt forced. Do they assume action films need to be balanced by love stories to be taken seriously? Regardless, a better plotline and less bland dialogue would have made this the franchise reboot people expected it to be after that last film.
  • Joey · 6 months ago
IT's an action movie about people fighting machines in the future. The first two had heart involved because they were set in a time where there was no struggle against machines, but in salvation there ofcourse would be less emotion which makes sense because of what they go through daily. Idk if i was being hunted by a t-600 i wouldn't be cheery. Bale was an awesome John Connor . Who else would have been right for the role? no one. The Arnold scene was awesome. I'm glad they did that. but come on it's not like this film went to cannes . It's a summer blockbuster. As Christian Bale would say it " get off the comment page you pricks."
  • JMoney · 6 months ago
I really enjoyed this movie. I agree it needed a little more character development, Connor's wife was useless, and i didnt really feel the connection between blair and marcus enough for her to justify breaking him out, maybe if it was rated R and we got to see that love scene it might have felt more real.

but those are just nitpicks, i think it was a good movie, 8/10
  • guy · 6 months ago

  • kahlil501 · 6 months ago
i just saw it-- i like hearing "i'll be back" by connor. seeing the bad ass arnold terminator, the scar-- and the father and son reunion. is this another trilogy?
  • logic · 6 months ago
I thought there was some cool scenes in it but the acting was terrible. The human/terminator was one of the worst actors I have seen in a awhile get a major role.

What the hell was the point of the little kid in the movie?

The whole snuggle scene between the chick and the terminator was absolutely ridiculous.

Did they even show any humans really die in this aside from explosions?

How insanely obvious or corny was it when Marcus gave his heart to Conner? Besides, how easy is it to do a fucking heart transplant from a terminator to a human in the middle of a desert just after Conner had a huge pipe that ripped through his body?

How come every time a hunter killer or one of those huge machines was close by they never heard it until it was right above them?

Why was Marcus such a prick and what was the storyline behind him being in prison?

Why is it so damn hard for the terminators to kill John Conner when they have far superior technology? every time there is an explosion or anything they seem to be a minute away. Yet they cant find one dude? Hell, one half terminator was able to escape their base with ease.

I actually did enjoy it, I just think there is way to many holes in this film. They had an opportunity to put together a VERY good move and aside from a few action scenes and special effects they really dropped the ball imo.

This movie had no real direction, just a bunch of random ideas and random acts, in which none of it was thought out.
  • Blade16707 · 6 months ago
I loved this movie!!!I really could give a rat's ass of all the negative comments made about it. People tend to forget that Connor is only in his 30's at the moment, he eventually becomes THE leader in his mid or late 40's. I think were expecting another T2 and just are afraid of change direction.I know T2 was a breakthrough film but let it go,this a new generation.

    terminator 3 sucked

    terminator salvation sucked.

if u wnat terminator done right, u will have to just get james cameron to do it. no one does terminator like james
