Boiling Point: Too Early to Talk Avatar?
I'm just glad they explained the J.J. Star Trek is an alternative universe so that they can take different routes instead having to be trapped by the original canon....so they could introduce bigger and better stories...you never know they could have all out war with the Klingons or the first encounter with the Borg in the next film...I'm just glad they made more of a Casino Royale/Batman Begins reboot rather than a sequel
Other than the scene with Old Spock, which I thought killed a lot of momentum that the film had built up, I thought it was pretty good. Definitely a movie to enjoy on the big-screen.
I was suprised a bit by the turn out at the theatre. I guess people didn't know it was out yet? I hope it does well this weekend.
Looking forward to more.
Short version: not enough tribbles.
Even a lot of the soundtrack, especially the first 20 minutes were TERRIBLE CHOICES!
Plot is just not Abrams' strong point. His motto appears to be "mess with the audience's expectations as much as possible and worry about tying it all together later."
And time traveling to the past is generally one of the more cheesy plot devices. There's always the question of "can you change anything or is it all gonna work out the same no matter what and we'll only realize that at the end?" Abrams cheeses even more here by implying that there are now 2 realities. No one mentions that, if things changed in the past, doesn't that negate all that happened after? In other words, all the Trek movies and tv shows...none of that happened now.
Or there's the 3rd option, which is the Marvel route and just you just say "screw it, we can't keep it all straight anymore, so every that happened happened, but now there's alternate universes."
Abrams' excuse is that he is now free to tell bigger and better stories. What, like a pissed off mining ship from the future, running around putting black holes in planets? Why did they need to drill anyway? Pretty sure a black hole on the surface would be just as bad. And why does a mining ship need to turn planets into black holes? Any mining material would be kinda gone then wouldn't it?
Meh. Anyway, it was still entertaining, and it's not like summer blockbuster flicks are where you go for solid plots or good stories. We mostly have to stick with books for that.
Only thing that irked me was Checkov's horrible fake accent, but after a while just got used to it.
Beastie Boys on a Stak Trek soundtrack? awesome
Loved Scotty's little KFC popcorn-chicken alien friend too.
I wish this was how they'd done the new star wars movies.
Glad I saw it. Girlfriend really liked it too.
I liked the movie but you DON'T get to tell somebody to shut up for not liking it. Whats the point of a discussion page then?
1) Spock and Uhura's relationship. I know it's an alternative universe, but you take a look at the original show and she is the most neutral character in the crew. I would have liked to see that again, however I do enjoy the fact that she blew Kirk off.
2) Kirk is a pussy! He talks big but man! What the hell? Let's let him kick some ass! Your 2 year old son could have kicked his ass.
3) This is the biggest one for me, and kind of a killer as well: Vulcan being destroyed. In all honesty? To me Vulcan's are a major part in the Star Trek universe, and without the race as a whole.... I don't know.
I liked the show as an action film, but I can't quite see it as a Star Trek movie. I think I would have enjoyed it more if Vulcan wasn't destroyed.
I will see the sequel, but it will be on a much more reserved mind-set.
