Film School Rejects: Discuss: What Did You Think of Star Trek?

  • Isamu · 7 months ago
Well for starters, I enjoy it more than any other movie of 2008, in this year of 2009 because it was so perfect to watch. Does anyone here thinks it was better than The Dark Knight?
  • _Christopher_M · 7 months ago
I don't think it was better than the Dark Knight...but it was more enjoyable than Iron Man.....

I'm just glad they explained the J.J. Star Trek is an alternative universe so that they can take different routes instead having to be trapped by the original canon....so they could introduce bigger and better stories...you never know they could have all out war with the Klingons or the first encounter with the Borg in the next film...I'm just glad they made more of a Casino Royale/Batman Begins reboot rather than a sequel

I feel like Star Trek and The Dark Knight are different movies so I can't compare them. Having said that, Star Trek is F*CKING AMAZING!!!!! LOVED IT.

Apparently, nothing gets JJ Abrams' dick hard like the thought of time travel.

Other than the scene with Old Spock, which I thought killed a lot of momentum that the film had built up, I thought it was pretty good. Definitely a movie to enjoy on the big-screen.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. A great movie to start off the summer season. I think the way they told the story opens up a clean slate for future movies that don't have to rely on Star Trek cannon.
I was suprised a bit by the turn out at the theatre. I guess people didn't know it was out yet? I hope it does well this weekend.
    Looking forward to more.

I wrote an entire review about it. Do I really need to say what I thought?

    Short version: not enough tribbles.
  • Mr. Peepee Pants · 7 months ago
I thought it was awesome. I love JJ Abrams' epic zooms! :)
  • Judson · 7 months ago
The movie was awesome, definitely in the vein of how I enjoyed Iron Man last year. The dude that played Kirk is going to be huge.
  • Jules · 7 months ago
Oh my god, just got back. I fell in love with it within the first 10 minutes. SO GOOD. I'm going to have to go again.
  • Primed · 7 months ago
I hated it and have no intention of ever seeing it again. I understand the need to do certain things like take out the Technobable and add more action to it, and even add some sexiness to appeal to mainstream, but to COMPLETELY rewriting the history of ALL the characters, rewrite the history of Starfleet and The Federation by DESTROYING VULCAN!?!?!?!? I mean what the heck is THAT! Scotty was never that much of a smart-ass jackass, I don't recall Spock having that much of a bug up his ass, he wasn't emotionless, he was angry all the time. Kirk hitting on Uhura in a bar, and one of the most RIDICULOUS things of all...SPOCK AND UHURA ARE LOVERS?!? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? Any extra aliens weren't even Star Trek-like aliens, those were aliens you'd see in a Star Wars movie. Stupid.
Even a lot of the soundtrack, especially the first 20 minutes were TERRIBLE CHOICES!
  • nicky_cavella · 7 months ago
you pretty much answered your own questions this film is an ALTERNATE UNIVERSE. did you pay attention to why UHURA felt sorry for SPOCK? guess not, u must some jealous STAR WARS fan boy cause the trekkers got a better film than all first 3 star wars films combined.(EPS-1,2,3)
  • Rhys Paine · 7 months ago
I agree with Nicky, Star Trek was awesome...you can't say a movie's bad because it's not accurate to the source material, ever see Lord of the Rings? Not accurate, but one of the best movies to ever grace cinema... So yea, Star Trek has a hit on their hands, your move Star Wars.
  • Mladen · 7 months ago
lord of the rings isn't book accurate? I have to humbly disagree. If anything those LOTR movies were way too slavishly faithful to the books.
  • Primed · 7 months ago
First of all, Lord Of The Rings was VERY accurate to the source material. Very accruate with all those different details and characters for making a MASSIVE book into movies. But the fact is, they are calling this an alternate universe. ok, I'll take that, but Nero killing Kirk's father would not have affected anyone's history except for JAMES KIRK. therefore, the need to screw with other characters (such as having uhura and Spock suddenly having a secret relationship for example) uneccessary and really forced, just to add that sex sells crap. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, I'm a Star Trek fan. This movie was just a bunch of action scequences set in space. Didn't have any of the real things that Star Trek was (i.e. loyalty, a better future for mankind, the closeess and family like feelign between characters, and intelligence) things this movie just did not have. I felt of little of that when Nimoy was on, but that's it.

I just saw it and I AGREE with Primed. I was so excited about it due to all the great press and good reviews from my friends. My one coworker said it was better than Wrath of Khan! NO WAY. It was visually nice, but I hate the alternate universe idea. I hated that they destroyed Vulcan. I thought that Spock marooning Kirk on that ice moon was ridiculous.
  • Primed · 7 months ago
There is a difference between making it more appealing to mainstream non-trekkers, and just completely making something different. And that's what they made here. This is not a Star Trek movie. This is not Star Trek. This is a space adventure movie who's main characters happen to have the same names. they simply took those names and threw them into a random movie. nothing Star Trek about this movie at all, and that is a shame and a crime. I honestly didn't see ANYTHING that paid real homage to the original Star trek fans. I must now go back and home watch a real Star trek movie or episode to get the stank that is this movie out my mind. they slaughtered the greatness of the franchise with this movie. i wish it was never made, and i will not consider it Star Trek.

Wow Angry much? What do you want primed? Lets get the old cast back together.... Lets call it Star Trek 11 the search for scotty's ashes. Really you have to be a little more open to the thought of a Movie thats not directed by one of the old cast members. Star Trek was great, is Great and ALWAYS will be great. Television and Movies I am only sad that this is not a weekly series.
  • Primed · 7 months ago
I'm not saying get the old crew back together, but the story was kinda dumb like all these other guys said here. First of all, the characters in Abrams Star Trek were not like the original. the only character who was similar to his original character was Karl Urban's Dr. McCoy. The fact is, these people were playing characters with an already established personality and such, so the need to reinvent that character altogether unnecessary and I think rude and insulting to the original. I didn't like it because it had absolutely nothing really in common with regular Star Trek at all. J.J. did not make any REAL attempt at pleasing the regular fans, only wanted to please non Trek watchers.

Overall, the movie was entertaining. Good casting, nice effects. Story? Not so much.

Plot is just not Abrams' strong point. His motto appears to be "mess with the audience's expectations as much as possible and worry about tying it all together later."

And time traveling to the past is generally one of the more cheesy plot devices. There's always the question of "can you change anything or is it all gonna work out the same no matter what and we'll only realize that at the end?" Abrams cheeses even more here by implying that there are now 2 realities. No one mentions that, if things changed in the past, doesn't that negate all that happened after? In other words, all the Trek movies and tv shows...none of that happened now.

Or there's the 3rd option, which is the Marvel route and just you just say "screw it, we can't keep it all straight anymore, so every that happened happened, but now there's alternate universes."

Abrams' excuse is that he is now free to tell bigger and better stories. What, like a pissed off mining ship from the future, running around putting black holes in planets? Why did they need to drill anyway? Pretty sure a black hole on the surface would be just as bad. And why does a mining ship need to turn planets into black holes? Any mining material would be kinda gone then wouldn't it?

Meh. Anyway, it was still entertaining, and it's not like summer blockbuster flicks are where you go for solid plots or good stories. We mostly have to stick with books for that.

I don't like the movie. It has cheesy dialogue, too much humor for my tastes, a gigantic contrivance, a horrible score, stupid lens flares, and Scotty is annoying. I've never seen the original series so I do not know if Scotty is supposed to be that way. Nero is a lame villain. How many times has the "you killed my wife so I am going to make you pay!" plot been used? It's the same thing here but done a bit differently with time travel. I didn't feel like the protagonists were in extreme danger.

I was blown away. Super movie.
  • Mladen · 7 months ago
Saw it with my girlfriend. Really fun, great effects, spectacular and quite funny. I like the mixture of fun and adventure and humour and action. Even had some genuinely sad moments, which was great.

Only thing that irked me was Checkov's horrible fake accent, but after a while just got used to it.
Beastie Boys on a Stak Trek soundtrack? awesome
Loved Scotty's little KFC popcorn-chicken alien friend too.

I wish this was how they'd done the new star wars movies.

Glad I saw it. Girlfriend really liked it too.

All right, stop! collaborate and listen....

I liked the movie but you DON'T get to tell somebody to shut up for not liking it. Whats the point of a discussion page then?
  • Terrible · 7 months ago
am i the only one who noticed how quickly he went from recruit to captain? I thought this movie was just terrible from beginning to end. I dont even know where to begin.
  • Allison · 7 months ago
Loved it! However - wouldn't Nero have been better employed travelling back in time to prevent the destruction of Romulus rather than some tit-for-tat destruction of Vulcan? Or did I miss something?
  • Blade16707 · 6 months ago
The movie was not bad,but I swear Ctp. Kirk was everybodies personal punching bag in this movie. He's gottin his ass kicked about three timesLOL.I'm like cant this guy win at least one fist fight?
  • Munku · 6 months ago
I liked the movie as a whole, I've been a Star Trek fan for decades. I do have a problem with a few of the choices J.J Abram's decided to use, and one massive killer.

    1) Spock and Uhura's relationship. I know it's an alternative universe, but you take a look at the original show and she is the most neutral character in the crew. I would have liked to see that again, however I do enjoy the fact that she blew Kirk off.

    2) Kirk is a pussy! He talks big but man! What the hell? Let's let him kick some ass! Your 2 year old son could have kicked his ass.

    3) This is the biggest one for me, and kind of a killer as well: Vulcan being destroyed. In all honesty? To me Vulcan's are a major part in the Star Trek universe, and without the race as a whole.... I don't know.

I liked the show as an action film, but I can't quite see it as a Star Trek movie. I think I would have enjoyed it more if Vulcan wasn't destroyed.

I will see the sequel, but it will be on a much more reserved mind-set.

Wow. We're all entitled to our opinions, but there seem to be too many purists here. I've been watching and loving Star Trek since the 60s but let's face it, it got really stale. This movie is incredible and it surely captured the essence of the original crew. Let's face it, we all knew there were going to be some changes so you have to roll with it baby! I think it was a great way to restart the franchise with the whole "let's change the flow of time" thing. Yeah, everything that happened is now gone; Khan, Tribbles, City on the Edge of Forever, all of it. However, WE still have it! It's called a DVD or VHS. Let's forge ahead where no man...um hmm...no ONE has gone before and enjoy this entirely new path that Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy get to go down. We have it again right from the start and as long as they don't blow it, it aughta be one hell of a fun warp drive journey!
