Film School Rejects: Discuss: What Did You Think of Pixar’s Up?

  • Ruben · 5 months ago
Probably the greatest pixar movie since toy story.
    Why?
    It had depth.
There were so many things not usually put into a childrens movie that really brought depth to the characters.
in my opinion, pixar will have to really try with their next movies to do better then Up

You are taken away on an adventure where you escape from the mundane and ordinary. The character of Carl is one of the deepest characters I have seen in animation so far (an easy feat compared to certain Dreamworks characters). in the opening minutes the theater was silent and you could hear sobbing and sniffles as we see this couple's entire life before our eyes. truly storytelling at it's best. I won't give away too much beyond that but I love how it comes full circle at the end. And the "All hope is lost" moment really pulls at your hear strings. The characters are really what make this film Russell the wilderness explorer who ironically has never been to the wilderness much less set up a tent to Doug the talking dog and "Kevin" who steals the show with every movement and noise bringing laughter. As a filmmaker the visuals of Pixar movies are what impress me the most and UP follows it's predecessors. with beautiful scenery and one particular use of rack focus that has become my favorite ever. the sequences with the balloons are breathtaking. So to warp it all "UP" (Yes, that was cheesy) this action adventure comedy does not disappoint. Probably Pixar's funniest movie to date.ALso the 3D was amazing and would recommend it there were no gimmicks including paddle balls. 10/10

Up was a Pixargasm. I think I might have shed a tear once, or twice, or like six times, and flat out cried a bit too. Damn you pixar. I'm a man. A manly man. Boys don't cry. We build the Eiffel Tower out of metal and brawn. 10 out of a tear filled 10

Hahaha, "Strong men also cry Mr. Lebowski, strong men also cry."

Amazing. Absolutely fantastic. I was not disappointed with a single aspect. I saw it in 3D, and was very happy that there were no gimmicks, as Trevor mentioned. The scenery! Wow! The vast landscape around Paradise Falls was incredibly realistic. I adored most of the characters (only one exception, really) from the moment I was introduced. A beautiful look at humanity - the delving into Carl's life with Ellie was wonderful. The adventure book.... wow. I shed so many tears during this film. If it isn't the best movie of 2009, I don't know what could possibly beat it. It's unfortunate that animated films are no longer nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and merely delegated to their own little category. It's the best film I've seen in ages.

A very well constructed movie from start to finish, while containing unparalleled visual appeal with the option of viewing in 3-D. Once again Pixar has risen the bar for all animated movies, with a genuine sense of caring and friendship, Pixar was able to pump out another masterpiece that will not be forgotten.

What next movies of pixar will be better than Up, in my opinion, maybe none could top this perfect movie that I hope to watch when the dvd comes up for me to download and then burn it on a dvd which I always do for better viewing on a TV than watching it on a computer.

Oh sorry, I give it a 10/10, I wish to give it a higher grade than that.

    A wonderful, vibrant film.

I could talk about the animation and effects, but this is Pixar, what else did you expect other than perfection?

I don't think there is a live action movie in recent years that had such a beautifully realized, and beautifully real relationship between a married couple as the one between Carl and Ellie Fredrickson. Their journey through life together was resonant and Carl's reaction to Ellie's death was hearbreaking.

I love Russell because he isn't one of these stock, precocious child characters that seem to populate Disney's live action movies and TV shows (maybe Pixar could take over those too....). Russell's a real kid. He's good, is heart is in the right place but like real children, he's annoying as all hell. One minute you love them to death, the next minute you're scearming "AW SHADDUP!!" to them.

I only need one word to describe how cool Doug the Dog is: "SQUIRREL!"

It is, without hyperbole, the first great film of 2009.

Great movie. Also, just as with Wallace and Gromit, the movie enters 'classic' territory by actually having an honest-to-goodness 'dog fight' in it.

Need I say it was awesome? No, because we already knew it would be. Hey, It's Pixar. But Up was so much more. The first 10-15 minutes were just beautiful. Up is the first movie I have cried in, and I'm not afraid to admit it. A must see. 10/10, 5 stars, whatever. Go see it if you haven't.

I rarely watch movies in theaters because I hate watching it with other people cause they are nosily to see it with but UP was totally worth it since people didn't talk very much while watching it, they just stood back and enjoy with no talking what's so ever which made me very happy.

Also if someone were to talk, they will kill you while watching this perfect movie, just kidding, that is what I thought.

The only movie for sure people shouldn’t download and then burn is Up because its deserves a big box office !!

It almost killed me because I was crying a lot during the sad parts.

Pixar did some really great things with Up. For the entire 1st act, I was getting the feeling that I was witnessing a landmark moment in animation, a film that connected with kids and adults without confusing the former and insulting the latter.
However, that feeling quickly disappeared with the appearance of Dug the talking dog, one of the dumbest, most pointless characters created by Pixar. Seriously, it's the Jar Jar Binks of Pixar, that's how much I hated this damn dog.
I thought I was getting a genuine, thoughtful story of a man going on one last great adventure, and I did, for the most part. But, I think the execution of the Dug character kept Up from reaching a new level of success, and brought it down to the level of an extremely well-made typical children's movie.

And because of that, I'm disappointed.

    Loved the movie...

...but dogs flying biplanes stretches my imagination a little too far for me to appreciate. I can take every other fantastical element, but that one just takes me out of the film. Everything else was amazing, though.

    I hope Strickland is joking.
  • Isamu · 5 months ago
Nah, Strickland is joking, he loves Dug as much as we all do.
  • John Strickland · 5 months ago
It's a great character concept, I will admit. However, they didn't do anything at all with him except a bunch of 'dumb dog' gags. It was irritating the writers had to inject such pablum into this otherwise great film.
  • Isamu · 5 months ago
By the way you're saying John Strickland, you're starting to make me hate Dug and I love Dug!

Up. My new favorite Pixar movie! This film's emotional and vibrant storytelling brought me to tears in front of my two young sons... AND it was animated! "Dad? Are you sad?" Bravo Pixar! Excellent!

    @John Strickland

I couldn't agree with you more about the talking dogs. What distracted me the most were the plot elements that comes off as being geared to the younger ones watching. "We can't go until we help Kevin" felt to me me like a belaboring sidetrack cliche. But what got me questioning Pixar's quality were the talking dogs. Dogs flying fighter planes feels more like DreamWorks than Pixar. If anything, "Up" is a balance between 3 styles of storytelling:Pixar, Miyazaki, and DreamWorks. Pixar is better than that to be closer to Dreamworks. You could argue that "Hey, it still makes money", but then that is not how I want my Pixar to be.

I loved Dug he was a major part of the comedy. I also like the talking dogs with collars. Pixar's greatness doesn't only come from the sad and meaningful parts, it comes from balancing them with fun happy comical parts.
And, well, the thing is it IS for children. Though it is always important to remember the parents who are the ones actually paying, it is important to remember why the parents actually first come. But Pixar does it in such a way, that it is pretty much unoticable for the majority and we all love Dug.
