Film School Rejects: Cloverfield

Another review I read (Grady Hendrix from Kaiju Shakedown) described the creature as looking like "what you’d get if Pumpkinhead had too much to drink one night and humped a Predator." So now I have to see it. Your positive (but not Harry Knowles Bukkake-like positive) take on it makes me more intrigued still! But do I go on opening weekend or wait a bit...?

It's a downloader, don't pay for this shlock. Acting stunk, CG was good, dialog was terrible (guy holding camera for the duration of the film was making jokes 2 minutes after watching his best friend get crushed by a huge tail that took a bridge in half, it became annoying). This movie in no way represents how people would behave in this type of scenario. People would simply be running for their lives, not running TO the monster to find a girl they slept with once two months ago cause she might like you. I was rooting for the monster within half an hour. He won (if you consider killing all the protagonists of the film winning, which I did). I was never at an point scared at all, it just wasn't scary. I wouldn't even call this a monster movie, it was more like what a bunch of idiots do when disaster strikes their city, and in this case it was run towards the disaster, which HAPPENED to be a huge beast. This would have been better if it was C'thulu, not some weird stilt monster with air sacks on it's head.

The movie took a few minnutes getting used to... my friend HATED it, cause he couldnt get past the camera shakyness... but like all films like this, THIS MOVIE IS A RECOVERED RECORDED TAPE. so EXPECT SHITTY CAMERA SCENES, AND EXPECT TO GET A HEADACHE... once the running starts, you suddenly get used to the shaky camera, and HUD starts getting better at holding it... most have talked about how Hud makes random unneccessary comments... and how the charachters dont have much charachter development... i beg to differ. Even tho this movie is out of nowhere... the HYPE was part of it. example, www.myspace.com/robbyhawkins

GO look at that, its rob, Beth, Hud, Jason, Jamie, and marlaina... you'd NEVER REALLY see jamie in the movie or hear much about her had not been for the myspace pages, and her video messages to "teddy" its weird, but this movie did something NO MOVIE has done in a WHILE... took DAMN time living up to this ridiculous hype. i suggest this, if you can handle roler coasters, GO SEE IT... but before you do... take a few hours, and READ THEIR COMMENTS... it made me have SUCH a greater feel for the charachters, and i understood WHO they were... its like... when i saw someone die... i actually hated it..... now the QUESTION IS... was that a smart and tactful marketing ploy? you be the judge. but yeah check that shit out... the movie was a DAMN thumbs up, i was on the edge of my seat numerous times.

ONCE I GOT PAST THE DAMN CAMERA...

as for the monster... what the HELL were those RED THINGS on the side of its FACE???

go see it. and someone answer.

Adil, I believe the red things were somehow related to its breathing. Like airsacs. Some amphibians (newts) have similar organelles.

It could also just be a useless addition used to show the monsters emotions, etc, but I would guess it allows it to breath both on land and in water.
