Film School Rejects: Captain America’s First Avenger Story to be Rooted in WWII

I'm not particularly impressed with how 95% of FSR articles ask more questions than they answer.

What about the above article is confusing to you?

If you're referring to the questions attached at the end of every editorial maybe we can clear up your displeasure. They are simply there to generate discussion after the reader is done with the content. We care what you think. :)

Komikon, it's time you shut up and stop acting like an idiot in the comments section.
  • Joe · 1 year ago
    @Komikon

why dont you like it? Cause this site actually asks our opinion? oh man god forbid they do that *sarcasm*

anyway moving on from that, I think its a great idea for them to start it off with Cap in WWII cause thats how he started in the comics, so it makes sense. As for who to play him, I think Brad Pitt has the look but might not be the right age or body build.

I heard Leonardo Dicaprio was rumored for the role but he's a huge no in more ways then one.

How about either Justin Hartley or Alan Richman, both guys are from Smallville but also have the right look for a young Captain America
  • Brad Spangler · 1 year ago
I know there has to be a willingness to embrace the fantastic when we're discussing the superhero genre -- but does it have to involve mangling historical timelines so disgustingly that a WWII hero was supposedly born in the Great Depression???
  • Jack B. Qwik · 1 year ago
My faith is restored in the film. As for who should play Cap, that blonde guy from Generation Kill (And Eric, I think, in True Blood) fits the bill, although he'd have to buff up.
  • JMoney · 1 year ago
It has to be someone that can look small and frail before the transformation but can then bulk up for when he is Captain America. funny that two actors who have a history of being able to do this have already played Superheroes, Christian Bale and Ed Norton. Hopefully they can find the right guy.
  • JMoney · 1 year ago
Brad Spangler: say he was born in 1928, in 1944 he would have been 16. plenty of 16 year old boys lied about their age in order to enlist in WWII, and plenty of officers looked the other way in order to let them, it's not that far fetched.
  • Cindy91 · 1 year ago
Why couldn't Will Smith do it? Am I missing something?

As for needing the two different body types, they could cast two different actors that look really similar. I mean, if the vita-rays, etc., are supposed to change him that much, he'd look a bit different anyway.
  • JuicyT · 1 year ago
Tom Jane, yes he was the punisher, but not any more
I think he would be perfect as captain america
  • Melkia · 1 year ago
I really like the idea of Captain America being a period film. It will allow for enough time to actually set up the character properly.

I'm not overly certain who should play Cap, maybe Justin Hartley?
  • Jack B. Qwik · 1 year ago
  • rorey · 1 year ago
Well holy shit if that wasn't the most predictable thing I've ever read.

The beginning of it sounds like Captain America #25 (The Death)
  • David G · 1 year ago
I personally dont think Will should or could do this simply because hes already done the superhero in Hancock. It wouldnt work. Nor Pitt or any other A lister. Like JMoney said, it'd have to be someone who could do the skinny and bulky themes like Bale did from The Machinist to Batman Begins. Someone whos face isnt already plastered in Hollywood.
  • Evie · 1 year ago
I actually think James Marsden would be the perfect choice. Cyclops is dead so that means he's not tied to X-Men (but hey, it is comics... where no one ever really dies).

Anyway, he has that sqare jaw.

    As I said, perfect:

Can we add Casper Van Dien into the role and possibly have Thomas Jane since he is not attached to the Punisher. I mean they had Rebecca Romjin in Punisher and Ben Foster while they were attached in X-Men. So we'll see. It will be great to see Captain America in period piece first and reintroduce him in Avengers.
  • big K · 1 year ago
The actor I've always envisioned to play Cap is Steve Burton. He's not very well known outside of soap operas (He stars on "General Hospital"), but he pretty much looks and acts like Cap in physique and demeanor. Also, he played a WW2 fighter pilot who makes first contact with aliens in Steven Spielberg's "Taken", and a sympathetic officer who aids Robert Redford in "The Last Castle".

And yet you still read it, didn't ya? ;)

I know I am a little late, but here is my story line prediction for the movie. 'Captain America: The First Avenger' will be Caps origin and will be set in WWII. The movie will end with Cap saving the US from a Nazi Nuke, by clinging to the rocket it was shot on, and Cap dismantling the rocket while in flight. The rocket explodes or crashes over the Arctic Circle, Cap is thought lost, end of movie... (This is story line is all common knowledge to any Marvel Nerd like myself)

Then, up comes the Avengers Movie. My guess is that part of the Avengers Movie will be about Cap being found & unthawed, the other heroes gathering around him, and they then take on the "bad guy" of the movie, who may or may not have to do with Caps past or his finding..

In Avengers #1, the bad guy was Thors half brother Loki (who used the Hulk to cause some big time destruction, the heroes come running to stop the Hulk, they learn Loki was behind Hulks actions, they stop Loki, they decided that they worked well as a team, and so they decided to stick together). But of course, Cap wasnt part of this storyline, he wasnt found in the ice until issue #4 I believe. Anyway, my gut is guessing that Loki will not be the bad guy in the film. I just nerd-senses are just not tingling when I think of this.

This is all just my guessing. What do you think? Let me know. - Senseless Babble

Looks-wise, I think Jensen Ackles would be perfect for Cap. I'm not sure if he has the acting chops, but Captain America is one of the least complex comic characters out there.
  • jennifer · 1 year ago
Rob Pattinson would work but he's British. Still he does a goodAmerican accent and is a good actor based on the early reviews for Little Ashes (he plays Salvador Dali). He has a fanbase with Twilight and has a body frame that can bulk up but can also look gangly if required. They could do what they did with Tom Hanks on Castaway. He's up and coming but not mega hot yet.
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
First off, I don't see how this is any great scoop, it's straight out of the comics, and the ghost of Jack Kirby could have written it.
Second, as far as someone to play Cap, Tahmoh Penikett BSG's Helo would be an outstanding pick, Tom is too short and Justin is too skinny. Remember we're talking SUPER SOLDIER here the man has to look the part! No more skinny Supermen in rubber suits please. I talked with Ms. Sackhoff and she thought he would be perfect for the part.
    Good Luck with this one!
  • Evie · 1 year ago
I like the idea of Helo playing the part. He has the requisite physical features and is already identified as a soldier-type.
  • web · 1 year ago
    Who is 5/5?
  • Lars · 1 year ago
I think the first Captain America movie should definitely be a period piece... Then at the end you have him frozen and he is awakened by the Avengers in the Avengers movie. My choice to play him would be Mark Valley http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0885090/. People say he might be kind of old, but I think he has the perfect facial structure, and the first time I saw him, I thought, "That guy should play Captain America."
  • Lerkst · 1 year ago
Simple. Damien Lewis: He played Lt. Dick Winters in Band of Brothers; his IS Captain America. He could bulk up, easily, and he like feels more American than most American actors do. Eg's Christian Bale, Daniel Day Lewis...actually, Matthew Settle, Neil McDonough...any of the officers from easy company.
  • Mr.Avenger · 1 year ago
Why not Matt Damon? or Mark Walhberg?
  • James Danger · 1 year ago
I agree with Mr. Avenger. I feel Neil McDonough, also from band of brothers, would be perfect. The frail steve rogers look could be done the way the young Proffesor X and magneto were handled in the flashback scenes from X3. He's got that upper body bulk, deep blue eyes, and he's shown that he can pull of the WW2 dress already. i dont understand why he isnt signed already.
  • tim · 1 year ago
I think that is the only synopsis they can logically take with Captain America.

When it comes to casting, I think its going to have to be a no-name American actor. I say the second part because Capt' is an American icon, and I think having a Brit using an American accent just wouldn't work well.

I think a no-name or c-lister would work best because I feel people would really like to believe this individual is Captain America. If you put an A-lister the focus would be more on the actor than the character.

I believe Brad Pitt would make a better Thor than Capt' as well, Troy anyone?
  • Lucia Ayala · 1 year ago
Who was the actor that played Kealy during Season 4 of LOST? You know, he played an evil soldier on the island (and shot Ben's daughter in the head).

He was tall...well built...deep voice...a great actor...and had piercing blue eyes. From what I understand, he was a pretty good actor on stage.

Of course, he was convincingly cold hearted on LOST. Perhaps he could give a screen test?
  • Don · 1 year ago
Captain America....'Dwayne 'THE ROCK' Johnson'.....enough said!!!
  • Anne On · 1 year ago
"Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army."
Really? Because the rest of America ignored it and only joined in when Japan bombed Pearl Harbour, bizarre how Hollywood tends to rewrite history to portray America as the Worlds saviour.
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
Anne On, you would have to take that up with the late Jack Kirby not with Hollywood. Those are his words not theirs.
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
If you recall your history Germany was fighting way before 1941, he started drawing Cap in I believe 1938 around the same time WWII broke out. Cap, Superman and Batman are the three oldest Comic book figures.
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
Sorry I was wrong he was first published in March of 1941, seven month before Pearl Harbor.
  • Andrew · 1 year ago
From the synopsis I would say they are looking for someone in their early 20s. Personally I think DiCaprio would work, especially given the physical transformation the chosen actor will have to undergo.

I'm not sure if he has the right look, but Paul Dano would be a brave choice. Perhaps a less populat choice would be Benjamin Mackenzie of the O.C. He has the eyes, bulk him up and he could be good.

And although he usually plays the villian, Ben Foster (Angel in X-Men 3) could carry the role.
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
I don't know why everyone keeps coming back to DiCaprio he weights about as much as a wet pair of jeans and looks as manly as a little girl. and Tom Cruise please Katie is taller than he is in her bare feet.

Did anyone see the Hulk clips that they said were cut but were said to show Cap frozen in the ice, it will be part of the DVD package they say.

They said to look in the lower left of the screen but I could not make anything out. "A human figure with something round - meaning his shield" duh.
  • mirnes · 1 year ago
wth he was born during the great depression (1930's) and fights in WWII (1940's)
  • Lars · 1 year ago
If you aren't sure of the math of how he could have been born during the great depression and fought in WW2, here it is: He was born in 1928 and enlisted in 1944 (making him 16, but lying about his age). Possibly he is one of the reasons the war ended in 1945.

Or, maybe the synopsis is really supposed to say he grew up during the depression. In the comics he was born in 1917, making him 11 when the stock market crashed. Which would mean he was 25 in 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Honestly, I think they should go this route with the movie. I'd rather see an adult as Captain America instead of some "kid."
  • Lars · 1 year ago
He was born July 4, 1917 to be exact... What an AMAZING coincidence! :P
  • Matt Damon · 1 year ago
I Should be Captain America! Did You see any of the Bourne Films?!?

  • Clayton · 1 year ago
Oh don't reply to Matt he's too short. He IS a good actor but he's just too short - Sorry dude.

Here's a question for everyone which would you rather see as far as the movie goes the original concept "Jack Kirby" Captain America or the newer "Ultimates" concept Captain America?
  • mirnes · 1 year ago
    jack kirby
  • Leach · 1 year ago
    Height
    6'2"

    Eyes
    Blue

    Hair
    Blond

This is the criteria of Captain America. And so we have find an actor that has the same looks. Also it has to be a non a-list actor.
And pls for the non comics dudes go to this link.
    http://www.marvel.com/universe/Captain_America
  • mirnes · 1 year ago
blue eyes blond hair all physcl qualaties of a nazi ironacly he fights nazis (alot of misspelling)
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
Mirnes is correct although much of the Aryan master race crap had not gotten over to the U.S. the '40's.
I like your vote for the Jack Kirby style but with the Iron Man movie and Hulk movie all the back ground stories look like they are moving towards The Ultimates style Cap, which might be a more reealistic apporach toward him.

Plus the movie or movies thinking along the line of a three movie deal will have a lot to deal with, a Pro-America out look in a non Pro-America world a very hard sell right now, Nazies, the Holocost, if they keep with the Jack Kirby story line Civial Rights, the list goes on and on. You gonna write about a guy dressed in Red, White and Blue showing up in Iraq?
  • dave · 1 year ago
    Aaron Eckhart.

Seriously... he wouldn't even need to act. He IS Steve Rogers.
Just give him some WW2 military training, and he's set.

Plus he's not a pompous Hollywood "big name" like DiCaprio, or Pitt, and so on. So sequels are less likely to cost an arm and a leg to get him signed on for.
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
Interesting Dave, in case anyone is wondering Mr. Eckhart is 40 years old and stands 6' tall.

I would not have picked him but interesting non the less.

Dave what movie style would you like to see - Kirby or Ultimates?
  • Ian · 1 year ago
You all keep talking about c-list actors being a necessity, but frankly i don't feel the same way. Look at Robert Downey Jr. Edward Norton. Hugh Jackman. Certainly not "C list" actors, but portrayed their roles exceptionally well. They are A-list actors for a reason. I wouldn't want some nobody to come in and ruin my dream about what Captain America would be like. If Brad Pitt were 5-10 years younger, he would be absolutely perfect. He has the body type to play a super hero (Troy, Fight Club) and is an extremely talented actor. Plus he's blonde. What else could you ask for?!
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
I would ask for someone who stands around 6' 4" with the muscle mass of a young Arnold, his hair color does not matter because that can be fixed, a good square jaw since that's mainly the only thing you see from the mask (think Batman) with at least some acting background.
He donesn't have to BE anybody, but I would prefer that he does LOOK the part when he is Captain America no more rubber suits ala Superman Returns. They can CGI a skinny Steve Rogers for the beginning, but the rest of him should be the real deal.

He should be young, mid twenties, it will be a three picture deal with him also showing up in the Ironman, Thor, Hulk and Avengers pictures also so you'll need someone who won't be showing his age for a while.

Heck, ya never know he could end up being an unknown, some clean cut All-American farm boy from nowhere USA.

THIS IS WHO IS PLAYING CAPTAIN AMERICA. I WORK FOR THE AGENCY WHO HIRED HIM
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
Not bad! Not bad at all, Jeff if you do in fact work for his agency you should press for them or take it upon yourself to introduce him to Jon Favreau ASAP.
    The guy looks the part!
Sex in the City is not what I would call a high water mark for acting but...
He does LOOK the part! If your in the business hook him up! Get this guy the interview, whats the worst thing that could happen - he gets hired?
And you? YOU become the man who discovered CAPTAIN AMERICA!
Not too shabby on a resume.
  • Jeff · 1 year ago
He has already been signed on!!!!!!

My agency is now looking for Wasp and Antman. They will decide by December 2009. I'll keep you updated.

Thor will be interviewing Jan and Feb of 2010

  • Clayton · 1 year ago
Thanks Jeff. Would you care to discuss this offline? via email...
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
    Jeff,

Just for a starting point would they like the Stan Lee Thor or Ultimates Thor? Just thinking of the direction Jon Favreau is going with the other movies.
I can have a script outline fleshed out in about a week or two.

Back in the 80's Steve Geppi (Diamond Comic Distributors) introduced me to Stan Lee, where we discussed Marvel making their own films, to help juice the idea I presented him with two script outlines one was for a live action TV series based on "S.H.I.E.L.D." and the other was for a live action movie "Captain America" about a month later I heard back from him, he loved both of them, but at the time Marvel Entertainment just did not have the funds to make or produce either themselves.

    I still have the letter.

Anyway, just tell me what they are looking for and I'll get started.

    Thanks.
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
Geez, I'm sorry everyone stopped writing.

Any comments for Joe Johnston as director?

Are there any casting thoughts on the rest of the movie?

Like who could play Bucky, Red Skull, Dr. Abraham Erskine, or Baron Zemo?
  • Clayton · 1 year ago
IMDb web site states that Mark Protosevick (I Am Legend) is writing the screenplay for "Thor" Jeff.

I'm not some pencil neck little kid, I AM A WRITER - Acts one and two are done and I'm about to finsih act three, leaving the fourth and final act. In two or three days it will be finished, and for WHAT?

If you're still out there young man you'd better speak up.
  • dct2209 · 12 months ago
it HAS to be a period piece, and as some people havwe mentioned in here, they could easily use the storyline form mark millers "the ultimates" where they assume he is dead at the end, but only frozen and found in modern times, the serum protected his body somehow.

I personally think Pitt would be an amazing fit.

also this is going to be a "mash up" of a few story lines, at the end of iron man fury talsk to Stark about the "avenger initiative" which is from the cival war storyline, the second Iron man film is rumoured to have black widow in it, nick fury is in there, half Ultimates too, and the first Villan they fight? the Hulk, in the Hulk film Stark is talkign to Ross about the "team they are puting together" (him and Fury)

All of these films will fit in somehow, i hope they can get Spidey in there also with tobey (circa spidey 1 not 3) in the lead, woudl be an awsome film.
  • Captain America · 9 months ago
i think Mark Wahlberg would be a good Steve Rogers and Captain America, plus he has acted with Edward Norton before so i think he would be a good choice for Cap
