Film School Rejects: By The Way: Coen Brothers Remaking ‘True Grit’

No. No. Absolutely not. Leave it alone. Back away slowly. I don't care who you are, who good you think you are...nobody in Hollywood is good enough to touch that memory with a ten foot pole.

I realize this is coming from a personal place and not a film one, and normally I just roll my eyes at any planned remake and figure somebody will watch it. But for my own reasons, this makes me more depressed than I can say.

If anyone can do it justice, it's the Cohen brothers. I usually take my remakes with a grain of salt, but anything the Cohen brothers touch has a damn good chance of being gold.

I love the original and it will surely be hard for someone to take over where The Duke did such a gosh darn good job in the first place.

Yet, I love the Coen Brothers and their work and I see this as a potentially totally different movie compared to the original, of course who knows if it will even get made but if they go ahead, I'm down for it. We need more quality westerns out there in my mind.

And that would insure I would not even think of paying to see it. Hell why not put John Travolta in it.

I have to agree with you. There is no one that comes to mind who could do justice to the role.

People use that very statement to complain about everything that is remade or continued with a different actor well before it comes out. There are countless examples, and it just creates a continuing process (nobody can top Jack Nicholson, now nobody can top Heath Ledger). A previous article from FSR regarding an extreme view of this: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/fans-move-t...

Will it be hard? Yes. Is there anyone out there who can do justice to the role? Absolutely.

ZMATIX is right - Brolin would be superb. It's rare I look forwrd to a remake - but this is I am!

Brolin is too young for the role. And he playing it would make Mr. Wayne spin in his grave.

No one can play Rooster but The Duke. Rooster Cogburn is an iconic role. One of Wayne's best in both movies featuring Cogburn and garnered him his second Oscar.

There are just some roles you don't mess with. This is one of them. There is no way they can make it better so why bother?

Excuse, me. I meant to say second Oscar nomination and first Oscar.
