Film School Rejects: Boiling Point: No Love for Horror this October

  • Chris · 1 year ago
    Damn straight, Robert. As a fellow horror fanatic, I can't help but be underwhelmed by the lack of genre theatrical releases. It's not like there aren't scores of films the studios own that are relegated to DVD this time of year that would be better suited for theatrical release... Feast 2 and Trick or Treat to name just 2.

    While it does indeed suck, at least studios give us those direct to DVD releases, and big box stores give us deals on horror films. So I guess all isn't lost if you're a fan of scares.

    I love the horror genre, and have to agree, the horror pickings are slim this Halloween. Saw V is just about all I'm looking forward to even seeing.

    You have to be careful with some straight to DVD releases, trust me, I bought Zombie Nation thinking it was a good film because of the box art and plot details, but both of those lied, that movie was a turd wrapped up in pretty paper.

    I have to agree whole heartedly. The stufdios have basically just pushed the rewind button on most of the Horror Movie releases for the past 5 years, SAW, Halloween, Friday the 13th. etc.

    Give us a break and actually put a few new ideas out there and they will see the returns.

    As an FYI... FearNet OnDemand is premiering Clive Barker's Midnight Meat Train starting October 1st. Would have been a lot cooler to see it on the big screen, but this is a nice October surprise while we wait for the DVD next year.

    You guys haven't talked much about "Quarantine." The movie it's based on, "[REC]" was very good. I hope Quarantine does the original justice.

    @Carlos
    I've been bugging publicists over Quarantine but they haven't given us anything. It looks good and comes from a good source, so we'll see.

    still not sure i want to see quarantine yet. I love [rec.] thought it was a great horror movie. one of my favorite horror flicks in years! I don't want quarantine to ruin the franchise! i say franchise cuz they already makin a [rec.] 2.

    This is EXACTLY why Warner Brothers never should have dropped Trick 'r Treat. Now all we have this Halloween is a sequel, a remake, a re-issue and a gimmicky PG-13 one.
  • Robert Fure · 1 year ago
    @Micah
    Agreed. No matter how bad it is, you release a horror movie called "Trick 'r Treat" around Halloween and you get a 20+million opening. And if its actually good, you might make 50.

    This may be stating the obvious, but the horror genre seems to go through cycles. In the early 70's, The Exorcist and The Omen came out, and a string of stupid copies and sequels filled the box office until Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Friday the 13th came out. Terrible clones followed. Then Scream came out and blew the doors off of Hollywood by following the self tongue in cheek indie formula, and that was followed by a slew of terrible copies that totally missed the point. Early 2000's: The Ring followed by 42,000 Japanese/Korean horror remakes starring a minimum of one dark haired creepy girl. Then torture porn came along (which I can't get into; they take the female-demeaning nature of horror to an unnecessary level and kind of makes me feel like a serial rapist for watching). Combine all of this with remakes of classic horror films from the 70's and 80's and you have the sorry state that horror is in right now. Let's just hope that we get some innovators in there to get Me interested in horror again. Because in my opinion, Saw 1 - 12 isn't cutting the mustard, its cutting the cheese.

    I'm disappointed with the lack of horror coming out in Oct! Halloween is my favorite holiday and since the theaters offer nothing my brother and I pick one night in Oct to have a few friends over and watch a couple of horror movies. I was hoping Trick 'r Treat would finally make an appearance because it looks pretty good, but at this point it's probably lost to the vaults and doomed to an eventual straight to DVD release. Heck, I'd be happy with that at this point.

    lack of horror? "Pieces" and "The Beyond" are getting released on DVD. Bloody Disgusting.com has more info under the dvd section
  • Robert Fure · 1 year ago
    @Dos
    The article is talking about theatrical releases. Lots of horror films come to DVD in a month, but most are crap. "Pieces" and "The Beyond" are actually two worth checking out, but they're still not new big screen releases, rather just old movies finally getting a decent DVD release.

    When DOES Trick r Treat come out on dvd anyway?
