Film School Rejects: Boiling Point: F#@% Free Runners!

I liked it in Royale but I get what you mean it's being RUN into the ground!. . .(cough). . .

Is Free Running the sequel to Cool Runnings? It should be.
  • ScreenRant.com · 11 months ago
Amen. It's right up there with floating, 3D credits that look like they're actually in the scene.

Granted I've only watched the sequels the one time, but really felt Bourne Identity was realistic in it's fight scenes and escape scenes. When he's fighting that guy in his apartment it seems real not coregraphed, like how two spys with equal ability would fight, almost like each guy's skill would cancel the other's out.

but again maybe it gets more unrealistic as the series progresses, i only watched the sequels the one time.

No I'd agree and say the Bourne films done it well and realistic.
  • CrazySphinx · 11 months ago
I loved it in DB13 and It was OK in the Bourne movies & Casino Royale.
Not cool in Die Hard, Quantum Of Solace and everywhere else....

I agree. Watched Babylon AD recently, and pretty much the same thing, with some kidnappers free running all over the f**kin place.
I look forward to a boiling point on shaky cameras and fast editing. It seems the staple in all action movies to have the cameraman induce an epileptic fit whilst filming, and the cuts in editing making each scene last a maximum 2 seconds. For example, the opening scene in QoS, i literally sat in the cinema and thought to myself "WTF!".. it was like being slapped in the face with lights and not knowing wat the s**t in goin on. QoS: Epic Fail.

Agree with you on the shakey cam/fast cut thing 1000%!

The free running scene in Casino Royale was one of my favorite moments from the movie, and it made enough sense for me. Seeing Jason Bourne do it also makes enough sense. But I agree not every bad guy should be able to do it and it is getting way over used.

I would be careful not to mix the terms free-running and parkour. There are a lot of purists out there who would get really pissed if you attempt to trivialize the differences.

and i agree parkour is becoming a little too common in action movies

I'm by no means an expert on either discipline or their similarities or differences, but in doing a little research before this article, I noticed that many people don't like the "split" between the two camps, as "Parkour" was translated to "Free running," roughly, when it left France. But as an art or hobby, its awesome. No slight meant to those athletes. I'm just tired of seeing every Joe on the street do it in a film.

Fuck shaky cam/fast cut! Cloverfield the shaky cam was fine, and in minimal use when it doesn't disorient the viewer, it can be very useful and entertaining. BUT in Bourne Supremacy, and even more so in Bourne Ultimatum (Two movies which I really like) were too nauseating because of Greengrass's style. Shaky and quick doesn't mean more realistic. What happened to nice long cuts where the director just lets the actors act? I've recently discovered Lawrence of Arabia and it is Magnificent. Where is the spectacle today? Long meaningful takes where the actors take the scene and make it their own? Oh and in Eagle Eye, which is probably the WORST film I have ever seen and I hate it with a passion, was made even worse by the director's shaky cam. Whatever, I completely agree with the parkour thing too. Bourne and Bond were good, but it's overused.

er..okay. So do u agree/disagree with me? I have nothing against shaky cam/fast cut being used PROPERLY! i personally enjoyed that shakiness and fast cuts in all 3 bourne movies, however in QoS, its hugely unnecessary!
  • Mack41 · 11 months ago
I agree it should be used sparingly and properly for the most part. I liked them in the bourne movies as well, but at parts in the third film I felt a little lost... As for QoS, haven't seen it and don't plan to until its on DVD

Regarding Shaky Cam: Use sparingly. I was in the minority when I felt it worked in The Dark Knight. However, it is definitely over-used, and is somehow mistaken for "style". The best fight scene I've ever seen was in "Oldboy", with one long steady take down a hallway.

Parkour was even in a cop show called Rush here in Australia. It weirded me out.
  • Mladen · 11 months ago
Shame on you for watching Rush. Shame.
Was the scene in question with the guy who played Drazic in heartbreak high? I'm pretty sure he was a pro skater in real life....
  • Mladen · 11 months ago
I think they should go back and redo more Parkour in older films. The opening chase sequence in Hitchcock's Vertigo desperately needed some pointless acrobatics. I want to see Jimmy Stewart do some wall flips.

As for the article, I feel this way whenever I watch most action movies. Whenever the hero/villain backflip-kicks or cartwheels around instead of just punching like a normal person.

I agree, the Caino Roayle scene was kick-ass. I was watching the film with people who knew the actor and said he was cast in the role because of his talent. Just because "Director A" used it with great success, does not mean everyone should throw it in for good measure. Learn not to cater to the bean counters writing the checks.

The free runner in Casino Royal is a semi-famous one (can they be famous?) so I could forgive it. It was kinda cool. And Live Free or Die Hard, I thought it was awesome. Maybe it's only because I love the guy who played the part. He starred in and was the stunt choreographer for B13. Oh, and in Die Hard 4 he was pretty much the sniper/assasin of the group; and yes every, and I mean EVERY sniper should be trainer in parkour. It just makes sense. They can get to hard to reach sniping positions and then a quick escape. My only issue with Die Hard 4 is that he is superman who survives almost everything.
  • Matt · 10 months ago
Oh man I totally agree. Those free runners in War Zone took me so out of the movie. But I got to admit it was funny when he blow one of them the f*** up in mid air. Did NOT see that coming.
