Film School Rejects: Boiling Point: Bring Back Original Songs

You should have written this one under your Things That Don't Feature. As in, Things That Don't Win Oscars: The Boss.

Top Gun! Footloose! Caddyshack AND Caddyshack II! He wrote songs for other people, like Barbra Streisand, to sing in THEIR movies! Kenny Loggins is The Shiz!

Seriously, though. It's laziness. Movie remakes and unoriginal soundtracks.

Keep it classic with Shaft theme

I want them bring back songs in which they recap the movie once the credits start.

It's awesome hearing a rap about a the movie you just finished watching!
  • Adam_Since_1986 · 8 months ago
You just made me think of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Man the rap at the end of the 1st movie was classic!
  • Jeremy_M · 8 months ago
I think ghostbusters has a good one also

WHY DOESNT OSCAR LIKE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN? He's at least as good at Huey Lewis and that Guy from Ghostbusters who sounds like Huey Lewis. Next year, someone should do a song about bruce springsteen, then oscar can vote for it.

"Danger Zone" isn't about flying an F14 Tomcat, it's about Maverick's repressed homosexuality. That is also tight.

And I would vote for Oingo Boingo's "Weird Science" or Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" (Rocky III).
  • Kevin_Carr · 8 months ago
"repressed" sexuality? have you seen that movie lately? it's gayer than Nathan Lane at a Chippendale's all-you-can-eat buffet.

I'm pretty sure Bruce wasn't nominated because that song was a piece of dog doo. I know Bruce is a big deal in lot's of places (mostly Philly through N.J.), and has a special place in Mickey's heart. Truth is that The Wrestler was fantastic, and that song added nothing to the movie. I'm with you on the rant you have here. But, I would have been equally disappointed with the Oscars if Bruce was up there and won. I think Jai Ho was about dancing at a train station. It's what I dance to when I'm waiting at Union Station.

Don't forget "City of Crime (Dragnet Rap)" from, well, Dragnet. Or "The Monster Squad Rap". Those were great 'retelling the movie' end credit songs.

Recently, gotta say that the best thing about Pineapple Express, for me, was the Huey Lewis and the News song.
  • curt · 8 months ago
im glad the huey lewis and the news song 'pineapple express' was only in the credits. the movie had such good music but the huey lewis jam sucked and didn't really fit the movie

Ooh, Will Smith's "Wild Wild West" and "Men in Black"
  • dragonmum · 8 months ago
Which we only got because Will Smith was a rapper before he was an actor. Seems that's the only time we get original songs anymore - when said singer is actually in the movie. Otherwise, we get recent songs that sort of, maybe, if you squint really hard you can see it, make sense with the movie's plot. Just a f'r instance, "What I've Done" at the end of Transformers made sense, sort of... or maybe I just really love that song.

And for my vote - The Galaxy Song at the end of Monty Python's the Meaning of Life.

How 'bout "Romancing the Stone"? It's like all those movie music videos that used clips from the film spliced into shots of the "artist"?
  • Adam_Sweeney · 8 months ago
Let's go ahead and say it. The song Bruce got "shafted" on sucked. It was the most contrived piece of trash I have heard in a while. It should have been titled "The different way Bruce Springsteen compares himself to animals with single appendages or talents." Seriously, look at these lyrics.

Have you ever seen a one trick pony in the field so happy and free?
If you've ever seen a one trick pony then you've seen me
Have you ever seen a one-legged dog making its way down the street?
If you've ever seen a one-legged dog then you've seen me

A one-legged dog? How many people have EVER seen this. I am tired of artists creating trite woe is me garbage. The Boss is no different.
  • RobertFure · 8 months ago
Even if you hate the lyrics, you've got to respect the guitar work. Simple, emotional, powerful. Way more deserving than Jai Ho.
  • Adam_Sweeney · 8 months ago
I don't mind the guitar work at all. Is it breathtaking? In my opinion, no. I also am not blown away by Jai-Ho.

"Have you ever seen a one-sized fits all t-shirt lying down on your roommate's floor?
If you've ever seen a stinky t-shirt then you've seen me
Have you ever seen a one-night stand with a one-legged German whore
If you've ever seen a whore then you've seen me"

I think after the Super Bowl show, that last line kind of suits The Boss. Just saying.

Here is a great example of music written for a movie: Chris Rock's 2003 film Head of State. They had breaks in the movie for the singing and the dancing. It was great.

Oh yeah, how about "My Name Is Bruce"? Now that had some awesome original songs...
