Film School Rejects: Batman on Screen: A History of Batman in Movies

  • Nevernude · 1 year ago
Hands down Batman Begins is my fav bat film.
Its got something different about it. No air of ridiculousness like Batman and Robin..no "lets get a gang of hot people together" like batman forever... and i hate to say this but batman returns was too amateurish and simplistic to be taken seriously. The only real contenders for the ultimate batmovie are Batman and Batman Begins...so far..

Heres hoping TDK comes along and destroys the competition..Like gotham city, we deserve a better class of.. ok i messed that up

Excellent article. I think that I choose to ignore the Val Kilmer/George Clooney versions of Batman in the same way that Saved By the Bell: The New Class, Rocky V, and Like Mike 2 never happened in my mind. They nearly ruined the integrity of what Tim Burton had created, even with the so-so effort with Batman Returns.

I really can't wait for the midnight showing of The Dark Knight. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the newest installment.

The 1966 Batman is the first full-length theatrical adaptation, so in terms of on-screen Batmans it is the first. :) Thanks for the comments and opinions.

The only flaw that I have found with Christian Bale (that you forgot to mention) is the Batman lisp that seems to spew from his mouth as he ridicules villians. I thought it would have been wiped up in the Dark Knight, but sadly,.... no. He re-emerges with his S's throwing me off of every serious remark he tries to make. Good article Adam. You are a good writer... Mrs. Ranson would be proud

When it comes to your comments about forever...
The Riddler was spot on? The Two Face performance was decent? Could you please mail me some of the good stuff you're smoking.

The '66 Batman movie is just like including "Airplane" in you list of favorite "Airport" movies. It's fun, but pure parody and satire.

The author of the article isn't smoking anything...

Carey's Riddler WAS spot on. Jones' Two-Face was decent...the lack of connection to the first film's Harvey Dent was disturbing. Nicholson's Joker was terrific. Even Catwoman and Mr. Freeze were portrayed with a bit of homage to the original characters.

My one casting problem with the bad guys was Danny Devito's Penguin. It should have been a much more "fun" character in the vein of Joker and Riddler. Not easy to watch at all...

The new films? The Scarecrow could have been done SO much better. Ra's Al Ghul wasn't fully explored, but the Joker is the kind of Joker this series should expect.

    Two more observations:

In the srieals, on the radio, in the TV show, cartoons and every movie series, Superman's origin was explained. I'm glad Batman's origins were finally explored in the first "new" film.

And any review mentioning the '66 Batman film and not mentioning the classic "Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb" line missed something.

Although Keaton did set the standard for Batman in live action version,Christian Bale was a helleva lot meaner and darker than he ever was.Bale took it to the next level to the point you would think that he's capbable of actually killing someone. After seeing his performances in Batman Begins and the Dark Knight I'de be screeming like a female If he came gunning for me.lol!
