Film School Rejects: Bale Backed Up By ‘Terminator’ Assistant Director

  • obensonreport · 9 months ago
There's a pecking order on every set. It doesn't sound like McG had control of his set, which obviously reflects negatively on him. If the DP was indeed being a distraction, then McG should have been aware of it, and pulled the DP aside and had a chat with him - especially considering that this was the second time he did it, according to Bale's rant anyway.

But that aside, McG should have done much more to assert himself, instead of allowing Bale to continue on for as long as he did. That kind of behavior could be very disruptive on any set.

Obviously, Bale is the STAR (caps intended). But, again, if the director had full control of his set, this kind of shit wouldn't happen. Imagine if this was a veteran director behind the camera; I know disagreements occur on sets all the time, but, I doubt that this particular scene happens on a Soderbergh set; or a Clint Eastwood set; or a Coen Brothers set; or a Scorcese set; or a Spielberg set; etc, etc, etc...

So, I blame McG for the entire thing.

I think McG must've been shitting in his pants and didn't want to be in the line of fire if I must say. And yes, it is like what you said "...which obviously reflects negatively on him..." Christian Bale is a good actor and take his parts into a further dramatics and I do not blame the guy.

I completely agree! The director should have been screaming as well... it costs a lot to roll film...
  • Trystan · 9 months ago
If it was a method actor thing, well... how come he spoke in his native accent?
    I say bullshit.
But I love the guy, whatever.
  • JayJayCAW · 9 months ago
I new this was gonna happen LMAO, I even posted that it would in the "No ‘Salvation’ For Those Who Distract Christian Bale" :D
  • CaptainReg0981 · 9 months ago
    LOL!
  • Tenika · 9 months ago
Honestly I'm not bothered about him blowing up at the DP. I can understand that being distracting and messing up his flow or whatever. What's disturbing is that it lasted for almost 5 minutes and NO ONE could get him to calm down!! But I too love the guy so I think I'll just do everything I can to stay out of his eyesight even if he's not filming lol.
  • CaptainReg0981 · 9 months ago
I heard the DP use to do the same way on other movies he worked with. I think people who worked with Christian would know better how the actor works his roles.

I don't blame Bale totally. Sure, he acted pretty unprofessionally by going off like that for so long, but from what it sounds like in that clip the DP didn't do it just once. He was steadily annoying Bale and I can't blame him,, I"m the same way. I can take annoyance for only so long before I lose it and freak out.

And it wasn't just walking into his eyesight. Bale said the DP was standing basically right outside the scene and his movements and actions were distracting. Pretty unprofessional on both their parts. The DP should know his way aaround a set a little better as well.

    2 words anger management
  • jack2jack · 9 months ago
Let me add Bi-Polar Disorder. This guy showed the same behavior to his sister and mother a year ago while promoting Dark Knight. It picked up a lot of press then as well. Let's face it, he has "serious" issues that go beyond the set.
  • blckmanjew · 9 months ago
it was probably just a mistake.. bale should be hung for what he did
  • jmg · 9 months ago
screw that... Bale had a point. Poor DP probably just trying to do his job though...

You want to see UNCOOL behavior on set, check out : http://youtube.com/watch?v=E4Qls1rAfYs

now that shit's out of line!

Nobody ever see how some movies are not made the way we think is made. As a matter of fact there are actors out there they think they know how to work the scrpt and they think they can take the matters into their hands and feel that directors don't know what they are doing. If actors are not treated the way they wanted to be treated they'll run you down til you feel like s**t.
  • RobertFure · 9 months ago
Let's be honest. If Bale walks off or gives a shit performance in Terminator: Salvation, the movie is dead. Would anyone give 2 shits about this if Bale wasn't involved? So you have to treat him with kid gloves. You can't yell at him and tell him to shut up.
  • nicky_cavella · 9 months ago
i wonder how bale will react if they offered him the role of SOLID SNAKE lol.
  • CaptainReg0981 · 9 months ago
Oh HELL NO!!! Solid Snake is role for someone else.
  • Paisan · 9 months ago
Im sure he isnt the first actor to go ape shit on a film set..
  • Sam_isusingan_ · 9 months ago
Nor is he the first person to go ape shit on someone.

Professional or not, people lose their tempers all the time, for retarded shit. Who cares?
  • d0x · 9 months ago
While the audio sounds very dickish on Bales behalf its taken out of context alone. Lets say you were at work, trying to focus and complete a difficult task and someone kept coming by and doing something that distracts you or forces you to start your task over. Would you not get pissed off and yell at the guy? I know I would.

Emotions...we all have them and sometimes they arent pleasant.
  • David G · 9 months ago
Agreed. Any one of us would do the very same, if not worse, in that situation. Hell, I'd have thrown stuff in that guys direction and threaten to burn his house down. Malotov style!
  • RobinRuinsky · 9 months ago
Bale's tirade was grossly unprofessional and the act of a spoiled rotten overpaid star.
If anyone went off like that in a "regular" everyday work place because someone interrupted him they'd be sent for counseling for anger management.
And big deal. He's a "method" actor. So what? He could have stopped the scene and asked the director to deal with the "intrusion" then moved on.
The director, btw, is as irresponsible as Bale for not sending his star off the set to calm down.
Instead it's excuses, excuses for bad behavior. Why? Because they're banking on him to bring in the big bucks to revive the tired Terminator series.
    I would have terminated him.
  • Sam_isusingan_ · 9 months ago
Well, you clearly don't have any sympathy for other people's failings. You're going to have to report to sensitivity training right away.
  • RobinRuinsky · 9 months ago
It's a bit more than merely a failing to be unable to cope with the slightest activity on a movie set.
I've been on them. They're not cocoons. And the actor who spins out of control over the slightest
event is an human being who is already spinning out of control. The people close to him making excuses for him do him no favors.

It's a tough line to walk. Nobody deserves to be yelled at for 3 minutes though. McG should have said, "Bale, take a break." If he said no, as it seems he did, McG should have said, "Okay, then stop yelling. Make a choice."
  • Aleric · 9 months ago
Actually I would call what the people involved and now what they are trying to do as "Enabling". The issue wasn't dealt with then and now they are trying to make it seem like it was no big deal. By doing that they are helping to create future incidents on other sets with other tempermental stars.
  • ANGRYBROOMSTICK · 9 months ago
who cares, people... my god! I come here for film news, not stupid celebrity gossip.
  • Sam_isusingan_ · 9 months ago
Clearly, but the point is that this isn't unique to actors, and the only reason its being made into a big deal is because Bale is famous. This happens every day, all over the place. Does it make it ok? No. Does it mean that Bale is human like the rest of the people on the planet? Well obviously. Should someone take him aside and tell him that his behaviour was inappropriate and he should trying to maintain a professional attitude at all times? Absolutely.

ain't it cool did a write up from another side of the story, 'someone' else that was there, I guess.

I guess Neil mentioned this in his post that's on the front page that I'm apparently blind to. You can probably just ignore this comment.

I honestly can't blame him for blowing up, he's just trying to get the ****ing scene done right
