Film School Rejects: Attention Christopher Nolan: Here’s A List of Good Third Movies

  • Curtis F · 1 year ago
I thought Nolan was in contract to do a 3rd batman movie? Good article though.
  • Cole Abaius · 1 year ago
    @ Curtis

Technically, he's not, and he often speaks as if he's highly reluctant to make one. Goyer said recently that they had a theme and a villain in mind, but nothing is concrete, and Nolan doesn't have to make one if he doesn't want one.

Sadly, if he doesn't, the studio might want to make one anyway, and we all know what happens when a new director is brought in on the third installment....

As far as this list, I noticed that it has several consistencies:

    1) Sean Connery
    2) Harrison Ford
    3) Fanboy flicks

Since Nolan's Batman films already adhere to #3, it seems obvious that the only way to make the third a guaranteed winner is to higher both Sean Connery and Harrison Ford. Possibly as Robin and Barbara Gordon, respectively.
  • J · 1 year ago
Arguably, the greatest scene from Empire Strikes back did not feature Solo.

You named 6. I know some specially equipped people who could count that on one hand.
  • Curtis F · 1 year ago
Ah, okay, thanks for the info. Makes sense.

PS - If anything could bring Sean Connery out of retirement, it'd be playing Robin. Definitely.
  • Harold · 1 year ago
you can't blame the guy - tdk was awesome but if the studios fuck with his batman
the way spidey got fucked with, then we'd have a disaster. bear that in mind.
  • Brian Rodden · 1 year ago
Nolan can do whatever he wants to. He knows the emphasis has to be on story and isn't going to make a bad third movie to please everyone. I would say that the Bourne Ultimatum and Return of the King are the only legit "third" movies on this list. The fact is Return of the Jedi had ewoks and is out of consideration. I thought the Goblet of Fire was the best Potter so far too.
  • Nish · 1 year ago
"Alfonso Cuarón, a masterful storyteller, who later gave us the excellent Children of Men. Regarded by many Harry Potter fans as the best of the series."

Childfren of Men had Harry Potter in it? Are we thinking of the same movie?
  • Mister Hand · 1 year ago
    Ooh. Nice catch there, Nish.

Oh well. What's done is done.
  • Nevernude · 1 year ago
The only real 3rd good movies in that list...and of all time..are Bourne ultimatum and Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. LOTR-ROTK is way way too long. All the Harry Potter films suck and Goldfinger isnt really a 3rd film...come on you know it isnt!
I believe Chris Nolan is more than willing to come back for a 3rd one however i would prefer that he spend the next 2 or 3 years making other less mainstream movies..experiment a bit more with action sequences because those tend to be his only Achilles heel. Then, when he feel ready, he comes back to deliver. I am not sure exactly how much pressure the WB will place on his shoulders as time moves on, but surely the billion dollars from TDK should be more than enough to fill the deep pockets of the high up executives for sometime.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
I'm sure I'll get shit for this but Godfather 3 is a good film. Not great and if were talking keeping quality at masterpiece level it fails but it is still a damn good movie.

I also have no doubt whatsoever that Pixar won't knock it out of the park with Toy Story 3.
  • Sohaib · 1 year ago
Okay Im just going to Point out a few problems with this post..
When Nolan says that there arent that many good third parts.. he means movies that werent produced as being a part of a trilogy.. movies like Pirates of the Carribean.. they made one part.. it was successful so they kept makin em..

Lord of the Rings .. was one book.. just like the movies.. are one complete movie.. divided in three parts cuz thier just that fucking awesome.. putting it on the list.. is just wrong.. If The Return of the King was a Stand alone movie.. it would Suck..(Not Really.. Viggos really hot) its only good when the other two are there.. Batman Begins.. does great as a stand alone.. The Dark Knight.. does just as great.. alot of ppl i kno love TDK... they havent seen Begins..

Bourne.. is also based on a Book.. but still a Great movie my fav out of the three.. i ll count that.. haha..

Prisnor of Azkaban?? are you kidding me.. and to rank it above Ultimatum.. please.. i mean first of all it fucks with all of the geography of Hogwarts... the place wasnt the same no more.. and they walk around modeling for Gap and Old Navy the whole movie.. plus the acting was bad.. thats wat kills the series.. the kids got no skills.. i mean they should have gotten kids with acting skills and not the fools they found... AND its a part of a seven book series.. okay.. when they sat down to make the film.. they already knew wat the story was..
(also.. i think making these books into movies was a bad idea.. they ruined the whole thing for me..I even started hating the books cuz now i picture.. Daniel, Rupert and Emma.. and they all just SUCK.. i mean Emma the most.. the way she presents herself.. its despicable..)

What Nolan is talking about is he has to create a story that hasnt been told before.. i mean hes not adapting a comicbook to Film.. hes creating an original piece of work using iconic characters.. Most of the movies youve listed are based on Novels.. which really doesnt work..

Also Nolan has said he doesnt want to make the same movie again.. he wants the genre to have a slight shift and offer something new... Bond Movies are all the same format.. (well not anymore...) . and the Bourne movies are like that too..

Begins and TDK... have a big difference.. one focuses on Bruce Wayne .. the other.. Gotham City.. its just so Broad.. and Batmans just a piece of the puzzle..

wow i cant beleive you just read that rant.. haha

I think a really cool third part was Back to the Future III.. though thats only cuz i watched as a kid.. and ur always fond of things u loved as a kid.. haha..

All of the best scenes from Empire Strikes Back has Han Solo in them? I must have missed Han getting his mud facial at Dagobah. Deleted scene maybe? And who could forget the classic follow-up to Vader's, "No, I'm your father" revelation when Han pooped out of carbonite freezing for a second to yell, "Oh snaps, Luke! James Earl Jones is your Pops!"

I am just messing with you. I like the list but Han isn't the only reason to watch Star Wars, far from it. Although there is a decent representation of Harrison Ford on this list ... do I smell a Han/Man crush?

    Nice work, Mr. Hand.
  • JMoney · 1 year ago
David, any movie involving an unnecessary incest storyline can't be considered a good movie. Other than that part of it though the movie was decent.

And I think Godfather 3 is a good example of why Nolan shouldn't make a third movie. The expectations were probably so high for Godfather 3 that no matter what they accomplished people were going to be disappointed. The same can probably be said for a third Batman movie.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
No Godfather 3 is proof that he needs to make it soon rather than wait years and years. But as I say if he delivered something that was on a par to Godfather 3 I would enjoy it but boy would the fanboy reaction go through the roof.
  • Mister Hand · 1 year ago
Personally, I think the best scenes from EMPIRE STRIKES BACK are the ones that contain the following lines:

    "I'd rather kiss a Wookie!"
"I can arrange that! You could use a good kiss!"

    "Who's scruffy lookin'?"

    "Never tell me the odds!"

    "This is no cave..."

    "I love you."
    "I know."
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
    Oh and @sohaib

enough with the elipses. . .
  • lordbeagle · 1 year ago
Sean Connery as Robin...he would so make being a sidekick something to be proud of...plus he would kick Chris O'Connell's ass...then he would top all the lists of who can kick ass as a sidekick...

btw great article...I understand where Nolan is coming from...he brought Batman back to respectability and doesn't want to end it with a flameout...

I agree with Nolan's action scenes...I've been watching Begins again and the action scenes needs to be fixed...

I wanted to read sohaib's post but my brain turned off and I fell asleep.

I think Nolan doesn't want to be known as a one trick pony. Movie fans know he did the amazing Memento and the pretty awesome The Prestige, but how many Regular Joes know of anything he's done besides Batman films?

I also think it's plausible he won't come back. While Nolan is godlike in his cinematic talents, do you think the producers are going to want anything else but bigger and better for a third? Even Nolan can be pushed around by producers I fear. Plus, he was even reluctant to do The Dark Knight.
  • D Train · 1 year ago
Regarding Mr. Nolans action sequences: They are perfect. Let's remember that Nolan knows what he's doing, and that his action sequences accomplished everything they needed to do: Convey the frenzy of hand to hand combat while displaying Batmans fear-ninja badassery. If Nolan wanted to make his action scenes like the Matrix, he would have...But then those action scenes would have undercut his story.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 1 year ago
    @D Train

Hell Yes. Just yes. I am sick of the complaints.
  • BS · 1 year ago
I hope he makes a 3rd but I hope he takes a break in between. He needs some time to do something fresh when the success and pressure for TDK subsides instead of jumping right in. Let him make another psychological thriller - Momento is great, Prestige kicks ass, and Insomnia is really good too - and let Christian Bale be John Connor for a bit. When they are both ready, they will come back and make a fantastic 3rd film.

Please, just don't let Angelina be Catwoman - we have seen her in Wanted, Tomb Raider, and any number of seductive badass with daddy issues roles.

Take your time Chris and Christian. There is no fate but what you make for yourselves.
  • Chris · 1 year ago
I also want to state that Army of Darkness is perhaps the best in the Evil Dead series.

Day of the dead and Scream are good examples of mediocore 3rds that you left out.
  • Mitsu · 1 year ago
Haha! Loved your intro- funny stuff. I'm sure we could all think of other really bad third movies. Maybe Disney should be contacted and given your same list before they make more disastrous additions to already fledgling sequels to classics; I'm actually afraid to see "The Little Mermaind III: Return to the Land".

The Bourne series has got to be one of the best, if not THE best, trilogies ever made. The fact that one has to spend more than 5 minutes deciding which was their favorite, should speak volumes about the films' quality.
  • JoshMinor · 1 year ago
Outstanding, once again Film School Rejects hits the nail on the head! Well done!

People may jump me on this one, but Alien 3 was one of my favorite 3's. It fit really well in the universe and was bleak and emotional. Great characters, good take. I enjoyed that they showed how the alien takes on aspects of their host(although in the directors cut the ox didn't make sense).
  • abner · 1 year ago
i kind of sympathize with nolan though. a third batman movie would be pretty
anticlimactic after TDK. after all, what other villain would we want to see go head to
head with batman? the joker is his ultimate nemesis, any other villain would just
seem like the villain of the week.
  • lee · 1 year ago
the third ''Evil Dead'' movie is the best third ever . oops for you
  • bloopy · 1 year ago
i thought the third of sergio leone's "man with no name"/"dollars" trilogy, i.e. "the good, the bad, and the ugly", was an awesome third film. . . in fact, that's one of my all-time favorite movies. . .

and although i've never seen it, some of my friends seem to really dig army of darkness which, i think, is evil dead 3. . .

and since he wasn't talking specifically about trilogies but just the third movie in a "franchise", the third of kevin smith's "jay and silent bob" franchise, i.e. "chasing amy", was a pretty good movie. . .

How about die hard with a vengeance?
  • Dexter · 1 year ago
I'm just going to say it. Harrison Ford as Bruce Wayne in The Dark Knight returns, with Natalie Portman as Robin. Bring back Jack Nicholson as The Joker (hes old enough), do it! That would also allow The Joker to come back without damaging Heath Ledgers AMAZING performance. Oh and use Christian Bale for flashback scenes.

    Yes
  • NoeleoN · 1 year ago
Just thought I'd throw this in there: Clear and Present Danger is the best of the Jack Ryan movies hands down and it's the third made.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Chris Nolan fuckin blows my mind with all his films but the big sha-bam is The Dark Knight. Everytime the credits shoot up after Gary Oldman does his speech I find myself with a huge chubby. It sneaks up on me. One time I tried to focus in on it but I got into Oldman's speech and bam there it was. Thats beside the point. If Heath was alive, God bless his anorexic fucking soul, he would whisper, do it Chris....do it. Remember the last time a good Batman director made two good Batman movies and then gave it to a different director for the third one? We do to. Dont be that guy who gives it away like a drunk teen asking to be ravished.
  • BadKen · 1 year ago
John wrote: "People may jump me on this one, but Alien 3 was one of my favorite 3’s."

Alien what now? There were no Alien movies made after the first two. I will not be convinced otherwise.
  • six · 1 year ago
I would point out, that except for Indiana Jones, they were all originally conceived as multi-part stories before the 3rd was even made.
  • matthew · 1 year ago
Why can't we all just chill out and let Nolan make up his mind? Even if he doesn't make a third he still made two really fantastic, solid, stand-alone movies. Everyone just needs to leave him alone for about a year. He'll come around. Just don't force it.
  • Timothy · 1 year ago
    Return of the Jedi sucked.
  • Peter · 1 year ago
I'm with you on all of those except RotJ.

Don't get me wrong - I'm a massive Star Wars fan, but RotJ was the first glimpse that George Lucas had lost his damn mind. Ewoks instead of Wookies? The complete removal of Chewbacca's backstory? This was the point where Lucas stopped making scifi/fantasy epics for adults and started making merchandising films for children.
  • Third films · 1 year ago
What about Nightmare on Elm Street 3? I think that would have been better to mention than Indiana Jones 3.

or even Army of Darkness? That was a good third movie. Or Star Trek 3 with the fooking search for Spock damn it!

of all the movies that you could have listed...yeesh.
  • CrazyDude · 1 year ago
Lord of the rings was shot as one long film, so ROTK is not really a third movie.
  • Amol · 1 year ago
    1. (" If you have any weaknesses as a filmmaker, it’s in defining spatial relationships during action scenes. There’s not a single fight scene in either Batman Begins or Dark Knight where we can tell what the hell is going on through all the fast cutting and micro-editing. It’s a small point, and the films are so good, they overcome that weakness.")

What you call a 'weakness', it is the ultimate definition of The Batman.
Even though Batman is a highly trained guy, his main combat weapon is... (you guessed it)... SURPRISE. Just like it is for a real Bat. The main objective of The Batman is to finish it off quickly IN THE DARK by subdueing his opponents AT CLOSE RANGE without letting them know what hit them. Just to blank them out fast enough.

And in order to experience the clarity of the fights long enough, the opponent should also be some sort of martial art expert to stand up long enough to The Batman. Otherwise it is finished as soon as it has started ...which is ... most of the times for the untrained opponents of The Batman.

The critically acclaimed Graphic novels of Batman also define his fights in a spooky way (with the exception of perhaps 'The Cult(1988)') which is the way it should be.
'Batman Begins (2005)' had the fight scenes correctly depicted. But I, a movie-fan and a Batfan, was disappointed to see a talented director like Nolan to give way to some demands of the so-called 'Batfans(?)' and to show the Batman fighting clearly in TDK which is not correct. Nolan should not have compromised on his own clear vision.

MY POINT: Batman is not just an ordinary martial art expert like Bruce Lee but is also a STEALTH fighter with Ninza-trainings. Period.

    2. And this is a personal opinion of a 'Nobody' like me (atleast NOT from the film industry) but... Harry Potter movies suck. James Bond movies suck (Except may be Craig's Casino Royale(2006)).

    3. ROTK is a Very Good movie but NOT a 'THIRD' Good movie. All LOTR parts branch out from a single story. Period.

    4. Examples of a THIRD GREAT movies could be :

    I) Shyamalan's 'SIGNS(2002)' if we just consider that it, alongwith, 'SIXTH SENSE, THE(1999)' and 'UNBREAKABLE(2000)' make together a top-class Shyamalan SPOOK trilogy.

II) Ratner's 'RED DRAGON, THE(2003)' of the brilliant 'Hannibal Lecter' Trilogy. (The fourth part did not really live up to the expectations.)

    5. Examples of a THIRD GOOD movies could be :

    I) Mission Impossible-3. (Atleast better than the Woo's Second Part)

II) Jurassic Park III (1999 OR 2001 - I can't recall the year.) - Technically brilliant. A really thrilling movie made with the Dinos as stars.

III) Terminator-3(2003) was also a 'Third' Good movie but hugely dissappointing in terms of what we expected from a successor of masterpieces like T-1(1984) and T2(1991).

    6. A Batman is different than a Spiderman. A Batman has a very strong dramatic character and a room for development/expansion unlike other superheroes. So any ordinary efforts on Batman by the standards of an extra-ordinary helmer like Christopher Nolan will still result in a 'Very Good' Batman movie.

But it would be good for everybody if Nolan takes a break from Batman for a while, cleans his mind-slate and gives us an another 'Memento', 'Imsomnia', or 'The Prestige' before jumping to Batman-3(2011 ?).

For now, Let's just wait for Angels and Demons(2009).
  • Amol · 1 year ago
... And yes, I agree with 'Bloppy', Sergio Leone’s 'The Man With No Name' Trilogy was Awesome including the Third part - 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly(1966)'.
  • Keith · 1 year ago
I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, and far and away the third movie was the worst. It's terrible story telling and steers the franchise towards the weird instead of relying on the actual story. I've read all the books and I liked all the movies, understanding fully how hard it is to translate literature to film, but the 3rd harry potter missed the mark terribly!
