Film School Rejects: American Gun

  • Matthew · 3 years ago
Hmmm. This one gave me a bad vibe from the outset. Obviously, I need to see it before I form a firm opinion, but when a movie is made about guns I generally expect to get some sort of gun control message somewhere.

I shall have to see for myself.

"Frightening reality all around us"? Let's think about that for one second. We drive on freeways congested with traffic moving at speeds so high and in proximity so close that a second or two of distraction leads to accidents that kill 40 thousand people a year. That is a frightening reality. Our major cities have the strictest gun control laws in the nation, especially D.C., and yet these cities have the highest murder rates in spite of it. That's a frightening reality. These same cities have gun laws that prohibit the possession of handguns by law abiding citizens, yet every criminal has a hand gun and the citizens are technically defenseless. That is a frightening reality. I cannot applaude a movie that plucks at the heart strings of sorrow while ignoring the true facts of life in the other 90% of the country, namely, that gun ownership has and always will be an American tradition and an American right as laid down by the second ammendment, and that guns actually prevent crimes against those less able bodied to defend themselves. That is a reality that frightens only those who believe the criminals and terrorists of the world are misunderstood, abused or disenfranchised. It's a statement of responsibility, for gun ownership is a huge responsibility, just like driving a car, flying a plane, working with heavy equipment or dangerous materials. They all can kill you if you screw it up.
