Film School Rejects: A Lesson Learned: There is Still Hope For the Summer Movie Season

    No love for Star Trek?
  • GyPirate09 · 5 months ago
Yea!!! WTF?!! no love for Star Trek?
  • Adam_Sweeney · 5 months ago
STAR TREK WAS BADASS. How could I forget? I was blinded by the idiocy of Wolverine. My bad.
  • Gopher · 5 months ago
This May wasn't THAT bad. We had a 2 poor movies (Wolverine and Terminator), 1 mediocre one (Night at the Museum), one good one (Angels & Demons), 2 very good ones (Star Trek and Drag Me to Hell), and 1 incredible one (Up). The good outweighs the bad IMO.

But Potter and Public Enemies aside, there is not a whole lot to look forward to regarding the rest of the year. I'm pretty sure Transformers 2 will be just as shitty as the first. Besides Megan Fox, of course.

I'd have to disagree about Star trek. That's easily the worst film I've seen this year.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 5 months ago
I fully believe Bruno will be epic.

Well, it appears Pixar is the anti-Fox

Eh, most summers are like this really. Big things you hope are going to be great but turn out to be the mass market pieces of crap you fear, then the things that fly under the radar and kick your ass.

Last summer people had a giant boner for the return of Indiana Jones only to be... let's be nice and say 'a bit disappointed'. Then a movie that not a lot of people expected to be what it was...The Dark Knight came along. Always like this.

And actually last year, as far as Pixar was concerned is exactly the same for me. I didn't have a ton of interest in 'Wall-E', went to see it when we lost power for a day, and loved it. This year I didn't know what to make of 'UP' but loved it too.

Pixar films are invulnerable to flaws? I would say the bits where the films defy the laws of physics are flaws.
  • Josh · 5 months ago
Yes, because as we all know, since the dawn of the Looney Tunes shorts, animated characters have always - ALWAYS - adhered to the laws of physics.
  • Thomas Collins · 5 months ago
LOL! Couldn't have said it better myself.
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 5 months ago
And this makes my argument invalid?
  • Davebaxter1989 · 5 months ago
I've got to say if Terminator is the let down then this has been a great summer so far. I mean who had high expectations for Wolverine?
  • Davebaxter1989 · 5 months ago
Not invalid per se. . .but certainly. . .flawed.
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 5 months ago
How is my argument flawed? So because every Pixar film and animated film out there defies the laws of physics that means it's okay to do it? That means it can't be counted as a flaw? My argument is sound. Josh's is not. Here's an example of his logic: A lot of conservative pundits commit straw man distortions when they attack liberals, therefore their distortions are okay.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 5 months ago
Right I was only joking by the way lol but yeah it's generally agreed that when we suspend belief that a rat can talk we also suspend belief that he can cook and therefore certain laws of physics aren't as problematic in animation.
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 5 months ago
Sorry I didn't catch the joke. I suspend my disbelief for animated films all the time but that does not mean that since most animated films defy physics, it can't be considered a flaw, which is what Josh is implying.

    Flaw;

    noun

a feature that mars the perfection of something; defect; fault.

So I don't see the physics oversights as something that mars animation films (nearly all of them for that matter). So flaw = bad, Pixar = not bad.
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 5 months ago
That's you. It certainly mars it for some people. I know someone who would be offended if he watched Pixar films.
  • Dan · 5 months ago
This is the stupidest argument. Pixar movies are the best movies out there right now.
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 5 months ago
You will of course prove this, right? Can you prove this without resorting to an appeal to popularity?
  • gamma · 5 months ago
Wow, what kind of joyless bastard would be 'offended' by an animated movie because it defies the laws of physics? Nevermind. I'd rather not know.
  • Thomas Collins · 5 months ago
just ignore that guy above. Obviously, Dreamworks sent him loose online to troll around and undermine Pixar films. How about a Panda that talks eh?
  • Davebaxter1989 · 5 months ago
And I know someone who is offended by carpeted flooring but I wouldn't get my film advice from him. With film it's about one person - me.

So dare I ask do you enjoy Pixar? Or are you defending someone whose side you do not reside on?
  • Kangaroo Be Stoned · 5 months ago
No, I do not enjoy Pixar. I think the films are massively overrated and I think it's hilarious that critics foam at the mouth whenever a Pixar film is released. I only like four of their films. That's it.
  • Davebaxter1989 · 5 months ago
I've got to say a 40% average is pretty high for a studio. And its not just critics that foam at the mouth its also audiences. I'm not saying you must love what others love you just must accept when your in the minority.

For God's sake, it's a kids movie! You're a grown man hating on animated kids movies.
