Film School Rejects: 7 Things the Uninitiated Should Know Before Seeing ‘Watchmen’

  • RobertFure · 8 months ago
    Minor Spoilers in Point 2.
    1. It doesn't feel like 2 hours. It feels just as long as it is. At least to me.
    2. I'm tired of them (them being Moore, Gibbons, Snyder, every critic, Cole's face, basically everyone) saying that only Dr. Manhattan has super powers. Clearly that is bogus. True, he is the only person with SUPER powers that boggle the mind. But The Comedian is like 70 years old at the time of his death and still a super strong athlete. Ozymandias is faster than a speeding bullet and can, despite his lithe stature, toss around 300lbs as if it was nothing. And the novel (this isn't in the movie) mentions people who are "sensitives" and states there are telepaths and clairvoyants. So this is misdirection or an outright fallacy perpetrated on every level. I get it - most of the heroes are normal people. But clearly this world has more Super in it than they say.

I'm one of the uninitiated to the world of The Watchmen, but can't wait to be one of the first to see it. I plan to read the graphic novel after I see the movie, anticipating I might be disappointed if I reverse that order. No matter what, I know this movie is going to be a much better experience than what I had last weekend when I saw Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li...

Hey Cole, you forgot to mention one major item: This movie is NOT suitable for children. I know a lot of people out there think this is just another superhero flick even though it's rated R.

There's EXTREMELY graphic violence in the movie and a VERY explicit sex scene - and I'm sure there will be lots of little kiddies in the audience because their parents didn't know what this movie is like.

I'm going to see the film, then watch the dvd full comic version of the GN. It came out the other day,,,

I think its clear that this film is going to be huge,,, the first blockbuster of the year for sure.

This is a really great post, and a nice contrast with the other 236,927 posts out there. There's a nice list of related graphic novel and fiction titles on our library blog for folks who are either new to this kind of thing, or who love this kind of thing and think they've read everything and probably haven't. Take a look.

    Great article.
As a person who knows very little about the actual comic and story line (more now after all the brouhaha), I had little interest in seeing this film a month ago.
What may make this movie fail is the marketing of it as an "super hero movie". Most people are worn out after the amount of shms of past years. This is why I had little interest.
It seems this movie is much more than that, and I wish they marketed that aspect of it more.

Yeah, thanks for great 'So You're Going to See Watchmen?' pamphlet. 8-)

It was really very helpful as I am one of those uninitiated. I absolutely loved it. It created an alternate universe in a pitch perfect way. Right from the opening credit montage I was all in.
