Film School Rejects: 7 Reasons Why a District 9 Game Would Be Awesome

District 9 Game would be awesome!
  • mychaleg · 3 months ago
maybe a broad-scoped game can be the sequel. plenty of people are anti District 10, so why not relegate the story to a medium where only the hardcore will travel?

btw, how long before youple shut up about a Halo movie? i love me some action, but what's the human interest angle of that story? actually...what is the story, besides some guys and aliens shooting at each other?
  • zarst · 3 months ago
Its actually really good.... try reading the series!!!
  • nicky_cavella · 3 months ago
wait so is it based on the games or the novel? well it dont matter halo is halo. its gabage. this reminded me of half-life and neil should do a half-life film.
  • PaulSileo · 3 months ago
The story for Halo is fairly terrible. Trust me, we lucked out CONSIDERABLY by getting District 9 instead.
  • Bill Radde · 3 months ago
The Halo 3-game franchise is not a great story standalone, but what they have done in the novel series to connect all the games has been pretty cool. They have Fall of Reach (Prequel right to start of first game), Flood (Halo 1), First Strike (Time between Halo and Halo 2). There has been other fiction to further expand the Halo-verse.

Also, your beard is CONSIDERABLY ridiculous
  • PaulSileo · 3 months ago
Well-played, sir. Well-fucking-played. Bringing my beard into this discussion has completely upped the ante.

    Bastard.
  • Pattypie · 3 months ago
I think your beard is considerably awesome.

halo is an amazing concept...it has a deep, emotional story line. it has wonderful characters and it would make a good movie. they just have to get speilberg away from the project.

District 9 would work best as a sandbox free-roamer, with the geomod engine if possible. The MNU would be missions about trying to get the aliens from district 9 to the camps, the Prawn faction would be playing as the individual PRawns who have different stories about the eviction OR playing as Christopher, trying to get the ship running, and the gangs could be all about extorting the Prawns and trying to get their weapons to work.

i personally think that district 9 would fit perfectly with a mmo rpg based game.
  • Matt · 3 months ago
Distric 9 is already a video game in movie form, so I can see this easily. It's clear that they basically made a first person shooter into a movie. That's part of where the stupid silliness at the end that essential ruins the film comes from. I'd guess they basically put all the cut scenes in the first 45 minutes and the rest of the film was the "gameplay" portion, with a short ending cut scene at the end. It's silly, it's over-the-top, it's violent, and it has a flippin' idiotic "pig gun" moment, it'd be perfect for what most teenagers consider a "good game" these days.
  • taproot · 3 months ago
Theres already 2 district 9 games:
    Prototype
    Section 8
  • Boxface · 3 months ago
District 9 already is a video game. You just don't have to play it. I sat through it thinking "never before has there been a video game with such amazing graphics."
  • Paul Mathew · 3 months ago
This was actually my first reaction when I saw the movie. I'd say that a D9 game could easily be in the same vein as Prototype, where there is not necessarily a good guy or a bad guy
  • edgeman4 · 3 months ago
I was thinking it might possibly be a good game but the last thing that came to mind is a FPS. Unless it can incorporate the story well, like Half Life, then maybe, but otherwise I would prefer something like Fallout 3 or maybe like Metal Gear Solid. I don't think an FPS could do it justice.

Still after thinking about it a little, I think I'd prefer not to see the game made, as it will most likely inevitably suck, just like almost every other movie game has sucked.

A FarCry 2 esque of D9, I could dig that
  • xdx · 3 months ago
District 9 does not need a game... movie tie-in games blow^infinity. Don't mess up this great movie.

The Mech Suit reminds of the Walker (sorta, minus the weapons) in Red Faction: Guerilla. I would love to jhump into on of those. I completely agree with your list, awesome job! PIG LAUNCH!

THOSE ARE THE MOST INTELLEGENT WORDS I HAVE EVER READ. I was thinking of this exact same thing while walking out of the theater! No other way to put it, if this comes out, I'd reserve it, get a collector's edition, and go crazy playing it.
  • JessiRae · 3 months ago
COMPLETELY AGREED. I'm pretty sure my boyfriend got tired of me turning to him every 10 minutes saying, "HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT, I HAVE TO PLAY THIS MOVIE" xD It was an amazing movie, a classic forever. I actually would love to see a sequel in three years, but if there isn't one, it doesn't need one. It's the best movie I've seen in years.
  • Max Ketchum · 3 months ago
totally agree, a district 9 game has so many possibilities
  • DeagleHS · 3 months ago
"They should make a video game out of this" - where the first words out of my mouth once the movie finished. I actually had a agruement with my friends as to how much it reminded me of Half Life but they where noobs so clearly it didnt matter what they said :D
  • hevtux · 3 months ago
district 9 game would be great but only if they let a good gaming company handle it, for example if we let valve make it it may not come out for another 3 years but when it does it will be a great amd fun experience with lots of new features and well done design, wheras if EA handles it we could have it in 5 months or so but it would be a frustrating terrible icky disfunctional ass of a game and would become a joke in the gaming world
  • somewhereman · 3 months ago
It would work, and be an awsome game. Just about everyone that saw the movie would buy it, but that's the problem. They already know everyone wants to play District 9, so they could halfass a game and sell it, and people would still buy it. So there's no incentive for them to go out of their way to make a quality game. Even if they do make an effort to do a good game, it still would be lacking compared to other games on the market developed for the sole purpose of being a video game with no ties to some movie company. And if they started working on this game now, it would take a few years before they could finish it (unless they've already started pulling a project together). So as much as I'd love to play a District 9 game, I'm not getting my hopes up...
  • twmcgraw · 3 months ago
i agree. District 9 would make an amazing open-map-game. fight from district 9 to the streets of johanessberg...then into district 10. it would be cool if there was a bonus level where you could play onboard the alien ship!!!
  • Godpimp · 3 months ago
I disagree, the best way to make this a game would be to give it the aspects of Battlefield 2's multiplayer. An open map where two sides go at it. Thats the way to go.
  • Fright01 · 3 months ago
I'm thinkin it could make a tight mmo xP Kinda like Warhammer Online meets err... District 9??? :P
  • adamln · 3 months ago
District 9 as a game should be made in the same style as Fallout 3 - storywise picking up from where the movie ends.
The aliens (as stated in the movie) are growing ever larger and eventually they break out of district 10 taking over several other areas in Southafrica, as government tries to defeat and recontain the aliens a large number of human gangs emerges followed by overencumbered police/military.
You play as Wikus right after hes fully transformed into a "prawn" - your job is to somehow get in contact with Christoffer Johansen (possible final quest could be decide wheter you want to stay as alien of have him transform you back to human) Obviously getting in contact with the mothership wont be easy - especially in a land this tormented by alien renegades, viscious gangs and corrupt brutal human forces.

Seriously could go on for hours unfortunatly I dont have the skills to make this happen but if any developers read this then please for the love of all gamers give us a District 9 game!
  • patrickgreen · 3 months ago
That sounds pretty good because fallout was an excellent game. This game should also be like dead space with the blood and horror.
  • dunnlikedinner · 3 months ago
I agree with willems, it should be a sand-box game, like a District-nine GTA type thing
  • patrickgreen · 3 months ago
This sounds like a great idea except for the First Person Shooter thing. Personal I'm into more Third Person Shooter. But besides that this would be like the next Resident Evil only with Aliens. Good job dude.
  • Name · 3 months ago
I highly agree. The only thing I thought of during the movie was, "This would make a kick ass game for the 360." I'm begging anybody to, the storyline is already made for you, just make it so I can play it! I keep thinking how awesome it will be. I wanna destroy shit and be the only human who can tear ass-hole with the alien weapons!

    great great great idea

D-9 as a sandbox game would mean endless possabilitys as a great game, and if bethesda got the rights to do it, it would become a total hit.
  • blarg13 · 2 months ago
wow you are the most uncreative person ive ever heard of, all youve done is just said hey lets re make all the elements of halo with this instead. the way to go is freeroam as your own alien who you customize and a slightly intertwining story to the movie but not the movie story line because basicly every movie witch has been made into a game were it followes the movie story is shit my frend
  • Aklium · 2 months ago
I think a game following the movie story line is too confined think of all the posibilities in an open world adventure with an untold story and open ending set before the movie
  • nocturn510 · 2 months ago
I agree, the seven reasons are very much game worthy. i threw this topic to the game addicts on gamespot.com forums can't wait to see what they say. http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs....

What about half life series? I mean, come on, even the "The Zero-Point Energy Manipulator" its like the the Alien Mech Suit Arm, also the MNU reminds me the combine's uniform and vehicles
  • Jarra · 1 month ago
Great movie. Most games from movies (and most movies from games) are terrible, though. I'd rather see this story stay in the realm of cinema. At the very least, let the District 9 universe define itself with some amazing sequels before branching out into interactive entertainment.
  • Gavin_Wells · 1 month ago
I would love to see a district 9 based game where it got away from the slums, away from africa, away from earth for that matter! Just imagine, A first person shooter game based before the aliens even got to earth, set on the alien home planet, possible waring from 2 or more rival alien factions. i mean , this could be the reason for the aliens coming to earth in the first place, i mean, they DO look like refugees. just imagine the possibilities of this game, the alien hardware, all those cool as fukc guns! mechs, vehicles, alien military instalations, im gona leave this idea to all of you guys, see what you think. But i know for sure a the game would work SO much better like this, than it would if it were set on earth. just my 10cents

i would love a District 9 video game.
i the beginning you metioned walking out of the theater thinking a few things : (a) that Neill Blomkamp should direct a Halo movie and (b) District 9 would make a kick-ass video game experience. the first thing didn't come up with me, but the second thing sure did!
    i totally agree

I totally support the Idea of a D9 shooter. I loved this movie. But what I got from your listings is that you thinking about some kind of the same story as in the movie. I think it would be better when it is an independent story so nothing is ruined when you already saw the movie. Maybe a protagonist who is a underground rebel fighter who worked with Christopher on his anti-MNU propaganda.
  • Lorand · 2 weeks ago
A game made after this movie would probably suck and it would probably ruin this awesome movie. But if a game were, then it should probably contain some of these:
Personally, I think a first person RPG would be much better, something like Borderlands. Also the player should have different "skills", these depending on what group/faction they choose. I have a few ideas that would be great for Prawn "special skills": apart from the obvious things like powerful melee attacks and being the ONLY group/faction to be able to use alien tech (I must emphasize the word "ONLY" as it clearly says in the movie that the weapon work EXCLUSIVELY with their DNA and they can't be use by humans), they should have some kind of "scavenger" ability, similar to the Undead racial "Cannibalize" in WoW (If you're not familiar with this, the Undead could eat a corpse to regenerate health), because we could see in the movie that liked rubber and they could the can of the cat-food; They should also have some ability to modify (boosting firing rate or damage) or even create new weapons (in the MNU headquarters Christopher made a bomb from several weapon parts). But to not make them too powerful, they should also have some disadvantages, for example not having the ability to wear any armor, or perhaps only a weak ones (in the movie Prawns only wear scraps of clothes). But let's not forget about the mecha-suit.
Gangs should be similar to the ones in San Andreas, and like in SA, there should also be multiple gangs. I really don't know what "skills" they should have, perhaps stealth, or a "blend in" kind of thing. I'm not sure about the vehicles, the only thing I saw in the movie was that rusty pick-up truck.
The MNU soldiers (which I don't think I would ever try) should be your average soldier, with heavy armor, grenades and fairly good weapons. Their special skill could be a helicopter with a sniper on board (it also appeared in the movie) or perhaps they could have snipers themselves. Tear gas could also be a nice addition. They should also have those cool military vehicles.

    damn, that's a long comment :)
