Film School Rejects: 31 Days of Horror: George A. Romero’s Living Dead

It's awesome to see a filmmaker unafraid to make trenchant socio-political commentary while chopping a zombie's head off with a helicopter blade. You (sadly) won't see that during the Presidential debates.

Oh, and favorite....Romero film...Night of the Living Dead. Genius. And it was released exactly 40 years ago today! Huzzah!

    Damned rednecks.

NLD is a true classic, but I prefer Dawn of the Dead for Tom Savini's brilliant SFX.

Great article! I really love George Romero and his amazing work, for NLD I would recommend the 40th anniversary DVD, lots of great special features and documentaries.

Favorite Romero zombie film? Oooh. Tough choice, as they're all great. To ride the fence here, my allegance depends on my mood. Either it's NotLD, or Day of the Dead. There's just something about the dialog in Day that, while extremely over the top (in both performance and as is written), just sits right with me. Plus... it's got Bub!

Dawn of the Dead was my favorite Romero film but I have to say I think Land of the Dead is A LOT better than people give it credit for. Sure, there's some flaws, but keep in mind that Romero makes social commentary movies and the zombies are an excuse. In that sense, the message behind his film, I thought Land of the Dead was his strongest and most poignant.

    In order of my faves

#1 Day of the dead. Underated by all means the FX are amazing and the gore factor is mind blowing.
#2 Land of the dead. A zombie epic! It's huge and has a very cool political undertone pointed at the Bush's rule of the white house.
#3 Night of the living dead. The one that started it all! it is what all other zombie flicks are based on.
#4 Diary of the dead. A lot of folks didn't like it but i don't know why. they hated DAY when it first came out also due to the fact that no one got the point he was making at the time (Military control within day to day life) Diary is all about us basing our reality on what we see on the net.
#5 Dawn of the dead. this one is so original. it's in the middle of a mall but it keeps you glued to the screen the whole time. clinging on every word and every bloody piece of gore.

Truth is my order on the faves changes every day. Romero for president! i love everything he deoes!
