Film School Rejects: 13 Films You Should Be Excited to See at Sundance 2009

Good to see Michael Cera is trying to break out of his acting box. Oh... Never mind.

A good handful of these look good, though I don't share your opinion on Fuqua. Black Dynamite, Dead Snow, Mystery Team, and Moon all have my interest.

His resurgance began with Sin City, why doesn't anyone want to acknowledge Marv!

Yes I'm headed to Sundance this year! No I'm not buying drinks! Dude, there's a recession on.

As to your second question (or would that be your 3rd?) I'm looking forward to seeing Big Fan, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, Black Dynamite, Mystery Team and The Missing Person.

I wasn't able to get tickets (either because they were sold out or due to schedule conflicts) to 5 Minutes of Heaven, Cold Souls, Bronson or An Education which is lame. After seeing the trailer to Bronson I'm even more bummed I'm not going to see that one.

"Big Fan" is my most anticipated film of next year altogether. I am so flippin' excited. The writer from one of my favorite films of last year directing and writing, and my favorite stand-up comic tackling a role with a tinge of drama.

Also looking forward to "Brief Interviews" (John Krasinski is amazing) and "The Informers" (I read a New York Times article about it, and it sounds insane).

Also, not mentioned, I'm looking forward to "Cold Souls" which sounds like it could have been written by Kaufman (Giamatti (ironically) plays himself, an actor that during an existential crisis decides to explore "soul extraction" as a relief from the burdens of daily life) and stars Paul Giamatti, who is awesome.

I really wish I could go, but unfortunately, high school exists.

Mystery Team is something I am surprised to see on here...it's a film I guess written by the comedy group 'Derrick Comedy' they do a lot of videos on college humor and I think have a youtube channel.

If you are looking to get some kind of gauge on what kind of comedy you might be seeing you should check out some of their videos.

Some of the names I can think off of my head "Kid Parkinsons" "Bro Rape" "Mad Hatters Disease"

Then there is the video where a kid wants a new bike from his parents...but they won't give it to him so he hires a hitman who kills his family after he tried to call it off. But his parents already got him the bike, so it's okay.

Or there is WQXR the Cool Breeze where a wolf traps the DJs in the studio. And the DJs keep up their show and continue to broadcast like they are just doing their regular show sound effects and all, oh, and the entire station has been killed other than the 2 DJs.

    Remember these are all comedies.

    @JMoney

I refuse to acknowledge Marv because Mickey's role in Sin City is nothing compared to The Wrestler. Watch The Wrestler then come back and make a new point.

So this is the reason why you don't want to make an Arrested Development movie, Michael Cera?
You're too busy making movies with your girlfriend?
    Her?

Ok Michael Cera has no draw for me what so ever. In fact I find his style of character rather dull and not all that funny. It works well in Superbad because Jonah Hill was an opposite personality so it made for a funny duo. When it comes to comedy duos everyone knows that if you have 2 guys who are opposite in personality it tends to make a winning combo. Anyways yeah what I'm saying is Paper Heart does not look that good to me, but I do understand why it does draw people so it's all good.

However Mystery Team, that is just kick face that you had it on the list! Man I love these guys their videos are hilarious and I was excited to see they were making a full length movie. The trailer looks great. I can’t wait to see the movie.

    AWESOME!

Nevernude, I have seen The Wrestler, I'm just saying his popularity started on the upswing with Sin City. I'm not saying it ended just that it began with Marv, so it wasn't the as recent as everyone is saying.

After just finishing the book, I'm looking forward to "The Road" (Viggo Mortensen, Guy
Pierce, Robert Duvall). Don't know if it's a Sundance movie, but it looks very interesting...

    "Moon" sounds like "Silent Running".
  • koew · 10 months ago
Dead Snow was actually going to be named Red Snow (Rød Snø), but the producers got forced to change the name due to a Norwegian TV-series by the name. Either way, it's going to kick ass!
  • CaptainReg0981 · 10 months ago
Oooooo another zombie thiller movie if I read it correctly. Dead Snow sounds like a horror hit as long as they used foreign language with a hot german actress. And Black Dynamite sounds Funky-Groovy-rific for my taste.
  • erichansa · 10 months ago
I'm amazingly excited for Moon. My only worry is that the director/writers don't really have an experience. Everyone else involved seems to be incredible. Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey in an eerie Moon-based film with Clint Mansell scoring it? Count me in. I just hope the directing and writing live up to the potential.

I'm insanely jealous of anyone who gets to go to Sundance. I get to stay here in the cold and work on my 10 page paper for one of my classes. Black Dynamite looks f*cking AMAZING!
  • Brian Rodden · 10 months ago
Big Fan and Moon are gonna be awesome. How far a drive is it from LA to Utah?
  • Jim Rohner · 10 months ago
    Because Sin City sucked.

Neil, I will be at Sundance as well and I will buy you a drink
  • rommy · 10 months ago
this is a disappointing list. you've taken every big star/big budget faux-independent Sundance film and called it out here in this list.

after having gone to the Sundance for the last few years, the quality is not in the Jim Carrey, Billy Bob Thornton, Winona Ryder films, it's in the 'below the radar' foreign films and documentaries with no name actors, and hardworking rookie directors who busted their ass and faced immeasurable competition to get into the festival.

every big star 'indie' Sundance film has been a massive disappointment over the last few years. the few that made it through (barely) are Waitress and The Wackness which in retrospect weren't really that good.
  • buckstein_frost · 10 months ago
rommy -- how is BIG FAN a pseudo-independent film? you have no idea what you're talking about. its probably about the most "independent" independent film to be shown at the festival in years. all self-financed, under 200K, no studio or agency support whatsoever.
